anyone have the skinny on when this may heat up this year? I’ve seen people fishing it the last few years in late August/September and would like to try to learn the area and make a few trips. Typically the water isn’t this high for as long as it was, so not sure how that would affect the bass fishing out there.

River needs to drop another 4' or more before it gets good.

It's on right now. Fish the falling tide.

My camp neighbor has been catching them pretty well for weeks so I would say it's on but he knows the area for bass as well as anyone I've ever fished with down there.

Been on fire for months, just fish have been small. My dad and son caught around 100 on a 2 day trip in July, but only 20 keepers. River finally dropping has pulled the bigger fish out.

How do you define a "keeper" bass? I've always kept the little ones and released anything over about 1.5#.

Would I be fine trying to learn the area in a 18' 6" Flats style boat? More like a flats/hyrbrid with a 150 hp. Or do you need something bigger for the river?

Something you could filet. Lot of 10"-12" fish a couple months ago. We keep and clean all sizes though above that. Mostly catch 1.5#-3# in venice. Normally short and stocky, call them venice footballs.

Yep we’ve had a nice 2 lb average. Shaped just like footballs. Been frying and blackening them suckers baw.

The answer to boat size in the river changes depending on weather, but you should be good 95% of the time in a boat that size. Low sides on a flats style boat is only concern if you had a strong wind building waves in the river.

Beware of ship wakes downriver after you pass them just long enough to forget about them...
