Looking forward to heading down there ?? n a couple of weeks...I have experience in big lake, the point,cocodrie/dularg, and GI. Mainly wondering what potential hazards to avoid and the notoriously bad areas to avoid. I'll be bringing a very mixed crew(72 mother inlaw, down to 11year old niece) I figured if I can put them on some bulls everything else was going to take care of itself.
Thanks for the replies

for a sure thing, get some dead bait and anchor at the end of the east jetty at southwest pass. it s a straight shot down the river, easy peasey

you'll need a good anchor and about 120' or so of rode (you'll be anchoring in 40' of water)

That's a hell of a crew to bring down for your first time with a 17' river. Not saying don't do it but I would wait to do that to later in the year when the river isn't so high.

I would strongly advise avoiding Venice for now for the first time when the river gets below 10' and even better below 4' in New Orleans you will be MUCH better off.

Good advice. High river severely limits areas that you can catch fish.

The river at Venice is very unforgiving specially this time of year. High fast water and fog can be a deadly combination
for the most experienced of boaters...would not recommend.

Hate to be a debbie downer, but now is not the time for a voyage south, especially with the crew you mentioned. High risk, and below average reward at this moment.

Agree with everyone else. The river is way more dangerous than you would think, especially right now.

I would not recommend trying to learn the area right now, let alone with the crew you listed

Thank to everyone who replied... about the recommendations that I expected and appreciate the insight... my gut was telling me to hire a guide and see if he'd run my boat for me and basically show me around

A guide the first time is a great thought.

I will add with the river like it is it will be VERY hard to find trout in Venice you are going to have to run from Venice to somewhere else to find trout. So if you are hoping to find trout really wait even with a guide. If you just want redfish and freshwater cats have them take you now.

Ultimately you like the rest of us are dying to fish with the weather getting right that's understandable. Just try and get the conditions right as well to make it a good trip and memorable experience.

Delacroix and Hopedale will still be on fire for trout and reds. Still make the trip, but change location.
