Recently posted about truck recommemdations. Was buying a truck bc of a job relocation to Alaska. My wife ended up vetoing that one, lol, should have seen that one fricking coming..so much for an Alaskan adventure. I imagine we'll be Midwest somewhere on an Indian reservation more than likely.

So the extreme cold won't be a factor so much anymore which opens up my options.

I'm really thinking about a used Tacoma TRD Pro. Link below. Anyone out there have any experience with the TRD pro? Looks great. I hear nothing but good things about the Tacoma. Also, thoughts on the price tag?
Alternative makes/models in that price range?

Ive seen some TRD pros with the "TOYOTA" grill and some with logo grill of the same year. I know it's essentially inconsequential but I much prefer the totota grill, just don't know why some have them and others don't. As always, thanks a ton OD board. You guys are always so helpful

Tacomas are great trucks, but I prefer a full sized vehicle.

If you want an offroad Tacoma, do it yourself. The PRO package is mostly window dressing.

But if you like it, buy it. Who cares what others think.

I wasn't asking so much about color. I'd get dark blue or black, moreso about the truck in general

That's actually a great idea

Does that package include e-locking diffs? I know my TRD has them and it was well worth not having to install myself.

I went from open on my 99 to the e-locker on my 04, and the difference was night and day

I test drove a 2015 TRD Pro and was not impressed. For the price of the Tacos, I would just go with a Full Size. The 4 runner has a more powerful engine than the Taco. I've heard the 3.5's were giving people issues on the newer ones. Just my two cents

Also, thats a sport, not a Pro. The pro has the upgraded shocks and other things. The TRD sport is aesthetics

Thanks for the info. What did you end up rolling with?

Also, what are your thoughts on these newer diesel engines out.. the 3.0L powerstroke with Ford and the 3.0L ecodiesel with ram? Is diesel even worth considering?

I had a '16 Taco for about 9 months. I had the SR, V6 4x4 crew cab. I was too small for me and my 3 boys with a couple gun cases and range bag.
The 6 speed transmission was awful in my opinion. It shifted constantly, and was in 6th gear at 45 mph. I was getting 23 mpg on my 30 one way commute to work, but about 16 mpg when pulling my 4 wheeler.
I went to a '16 4Runner and I am much happier. I only get 20 mpg in my commute and about 18 when pulling the 4 wheeler, but it is much better suited for my needs.

Plans for the truck?
Load it full and spend 5 days living out of it?
Short weekends?
Just drive a dirt road?

I ended up buying a 14' FJ Cruiser that I got an insane deal on with 19K miles. Kept that for 8 months. I recently sold my Gheenoe and upgraded to a larger boat that the FJ could easily pull, but it wasn't comfortable. I traded it for a 16' Tundra a few weeks ago. I'm loving the extra space and the horsepower. Its been nice.

A truck that can make an offroad trip, haul a boat, and function as a family vehicle

An actual TRD Pro has upgrades that make it worth it off road. Nothing you can't add yourself but......IMO get a 4x and rock it. Plenty of aftermarket if you feel it needs something later. Haven't really looked but I imagine a TRD Pro would be easier to sell in a few years.

then a taco isn't for you. 30k for a tiny truck with no room that your family is gonna complain about being cramped in

You realize my 2011 Tacoma has roughly the same towing capacity as a late 90s half ton correct?

You could buy an F150 Supercab for the same price. It will have more front and rear leg room, a bigger bed, more towing capacity, and the same gas mileage.

You can buy a crewcab Tundra Pro for only a few more thousand than the Toyota.

The only thing is that the Tundra doesn’t have the crawl, or locking rear, and it has different reservoir shocks.

You can pull a boat with a Tacoma. The off-roading abilities of the Taco Pro are overkill. Their resale would be better than most.
