The LDWF is going to close waterfowl hunting north of HWY 90 in pearl river WMA next year during flood stage,
They are doing this under the guise of not stressing deer along HWY 11 during floods. However, if you've been out there you know that HWY 11 is a steep banked 20' wide strip that is all paved. Please call or write in and voice your displeasure with this resolution. Even if you don't hunt pearl river, we need to stand up for our access rights. THE LDWF point of contact is
Tommy Tuma, LDWF Wildlife Division, P.O. Box 98000, Baton Rouge, LA. 70898-9000 or 225-765-2349 or by e-mail at ttuma@wlf.la.gov.
the link to the resolution is mid way down this page

Well that's not very wide at all.

Hwy 11 doesn't come anywhere near the WMA until well north of I-10, why is the boundary considered Hwy 90 well to the south? Something doesn't smell right

If I had to take a guess, probably to simplify it for enforcement since Hwy 90 is already the boundary between east and coastal zone

I would think it is meant more for the ridges not just Hwy 11, which are above Hwy 90.

You would be correct:

quote:

This is due to disturbance/impacts to wildlife confined on high ground north of Highway 90.

Nothing to do with Hwy 11.

get back to me when you figure out what the highest piece of ground north of 90 within the management area is. I'll give you a hint, its a contiguous straight line running west to east just after the west pearl crossing on 59. The language in the original posting is what I was told by someone implementing the rule

I thought the WMA shuts down at flood stage from old 11 south to 90 already?

Once that river hits 16ft, Oil well road gets covered with water and gets worse as the river gets higher. Every half foot is a huge increase out there.
The wood duck hunters that race out there before light to shoot their 2 ducks in 20 minutes upset?

It sucks for the private land owner out there when the main gate is shut. He now has to find a different route to his property from the river itself.

Never mind...I see my mistake. You're right in your reading. My mistaken post remains below, not going to hide it.

quote:

The LDWF is going to close waterfowl hunting north of HWY 90 in pearl river WMA next year during flood stage,

From link:

quote:

Proposal to close all hunting except waterfowl south of Highway 90 on Pearl River WMA when the gauge is 16.5 feet. Current regulation allows waterfowl hunting area-wide during benchmark closure. This is due to disturbance/impacts to wildlife confined on high ground north of Highway 90.

Are you in a hissy for no reason?

Seems like you got both your directions wrong and missed the word "except."

Though, the typo could be on LDWF's end, and I could be misunderstanding...I've had a difficult day.

I agree with LDWF and disagree with you. The deer need a safe haven during floods, find somewhere else to chase ducks
