UPDATED: Close friend let me down tonight (gun safety related)
Got a phone call at 2:00am that one of my close friends accidentally shot himself in the leg. It happened in student housing. They got lucky because they live in the basement level of the complex, so the bullet didn’t go through the floor to hit someone else.

He did what a lot of college kids do and went out drinking tonight. He came home drunk and ended up messing with his pistol only to shoot himself in the leg. He’s in the hospitial recovering well, so he’ll be okay. He’s lucky nobody else was hurt.

The moral of the story is alcohol and guns don’t mix. I almost lost someone close to me tonight.

If you own a gun, be responsible at all times! All it takes is one mistake.

They allow guns in student housing?

Dude is lucky. Pretty stupid thing to do.

It’s off-campus, but I doubt they’re allowed to have guns on the property. I’m worried about him being in trouble with the law. The cops took all his guns.

He’s a good kid. He just made one silly mistake tonight. He’s lucky it wasn’t worse.

Alcohol
Guns
Ammunition

You can have 2 of them, but never allow yourself to have all 3 at the same time.

We are. But, most of us are adults.

This is the kind of advice you should have been giving your idiot friend. He should be charged and jailed and/or fined. I don’t care about his leg. I’m thankful he didn’t kill or injure someone in the next room, or that may have been with him.

Oh, he's in trouble with the law alright. They wouldn't have taken all the guns if he wasn't.

Seems to always be the story. And often times that is the case.

But damn, there's a lot of good kids out there that own guns and drink alcohol and somehow manage to NOT shoot themselves.

Shooting yourself in the leg is not a silly mistake. It's incredibly stupid and dangerous. Thankfully, he shot himself and not someone else. He's lucky he wasn't stupid enough to shoot himself in a major artery.

Glad he is ok, and hopefully that’s a mistake he only makes once.

A former coworker of mine recently had to have his leg amputated for accidentally shooting himself. This guy has been around guns his entire life. He has a collection that would make a lot of people jealous. He was hunting, had his .45 in his pant pocket. Went to pull it out and the gun went off sending the bullet tumbling down his entire leg. I saw the pictures and it almost made me throw up. Looked like a bomb was set off in his leg from about mid thigh all the way down.

Guns and alcohol don’t mix. But he wasn’t drinking. Don’t make poor decisions or get complacent either.

Could’ve been a lot worse for your friend. He should count himself lucky if the damage isn’t too severe.

I had a cousin that was out late one night and was drunk. He was getting a ride home but didn’t want to leave his gun in his truck. He went to get it and when he grabbed it he grabbed the trigger. Shot himself in the chest and died.

This is why any of my loaded handguns are always sitting in a holster, even if it’s not on my body.

Always protect the trigger when the gun is chambered! Always.

I've gone 50 years without any of my guns revolting and killing anyone, or doing something stupid myself

It's common sense. The overwhelming majority of gun owners possess common sense.

Glad he's ok, but I don't see how discharging a gun in student housing isn't an automatic expulsion especially if alcohol was involved

re: UPDATED: Close friend let me down tonight (gun safety related)
Years ago the neighborhood gang and I were farting around when one of my buddies picked up my dad's 30-30 lever action.

He half cocked it and saw a bullet so he closed it real fast and BAM, right in the kitchen. Damn lucky he didn't kill someone, there were 6-7 kids standing around.

The bullet went through a chair, through a wall, into my mom's china cabinet, ricochets down into a box of silverware.

We were all lucky that day but it taught us a valuable lesson about loaded guns in the house
