Any idea what species this baby snake is? He's a little flatter from me stomping on him. The deck boards are 2x4s for scale. I've found 3 of these little buggers on my deck the last couple of months, all about the same size.

Any help IDing it would be much appreciated.

Near water? Could be plain bellied or banded.

There is a seasonal creek (been dry for months) about 150 yards away. No other water besides swimming pool, horse watering trough.

So, before it was flat, did it look like this?

Maybe a hognose snake or some kind of rat/corn snake? It’s hard to tell because can’t see the head. Has patterns and some color similar to a Pygmy Rattler but doesn’t look like it has a rattle on it.

It really looks like a Blotched Water Snake; they were pretty common in New Braunfels.

Thanks for all the non-rattlesnake replies. I called and cancelled the movers.

If that's a 2x4 he's smashed on, it is about all of 1/4" wide smashed.

I'll put my $1 on a rat snake.

Looks like one them thar Texas Widebellied Flatheads.

Good thing you snapped a pic, they've got an extremely short lifespan.

I’ve seen lots of Snake ID threads but this is the first one where the snake was stomped to death.

It wasn’t necessary for you to stomp on it the way you did
