Tundra question
Good afternoon,

I have a 2012 Tundra ,non-Baller here, and the last few mornings when I have started it(been very cold, low teens) it has ticked for a few minutes until warm. From what I have read online, it seems pretty common in Tundras. Anyone with some ideas on what it could be? Online forums said it could be possible piston clatter, lifters, injectors. Not really sure though.

TIA

re: Tundra question
My 08 used to sound like that on cold mornings. Almost like a diesel. Best truck I ever owned--traded it for a new one this past summer and it had 250K or so on it and I never put a wrench on it except for oil change, brake pads and one tune up.

re: Tundra question
I have an ‘08 and it has made that sound hot or cold (but worse when cold) for probably 7 years. It also has a ton of valvetrain clatter when it’s cold outside and sounds almost like a diesel in those conditions until it warms up.

There’s nothing wrong with it. That’s just how they sound.

re: Tundra question
Oil isn’t thinned out from warming up yet. More internal metal to metal than on a hot day

re: Tundra question
Last year about this time the 4wd on my '14 locked up. Wouldn't transfer from 4 low back to hi or 2wd, until it warmed up. I don't think the yotas like the cold weather.

Yep, my Tundra also makes a few odd noises for a bit on cold mornings until that oil gets circulating.

re: Tundra question
My 16 tundra sounds like a diesel on cool mornings and runs at a higher rpm until warmed. Usually a couple miles in the highway

re: Tundra question
I'm not a mechanic, but maybe look into running a different weight oil during your winter oil change?
