President Donald Trump has signed a nutria eradication bill that will make Louisiana's fight against the wetland-devouring rodent a national one.
The bill, pushed by U.S. Rep. Garret Graves, R-Baton Rouge, and Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., broadens the scope of the Nutria Eradication and Control Act of 2003 to include all states — not just Louisiana and Maryland, where the orange-toothed, South American import has been gnawing away at coastal marshes for decades. Nutria have spread far beyond the Gulf of Mexico and East Coast and are now destroying wetlands in Oregon and California.
quote:
The bill triples the amount of federal money available to fight the spread of nutria. The federal government currently budgets $4 million each year to support nutria hunting and trapping programs in Louisiana and Maryland. The bill would make $12 million available each year to all affected states until 2025.

For all of that, there is a 5 freakin limit on taking of nutria on WMAs
SEASON: Sept. 1 - Feb. 28. See exception below for certain WMAs.
PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES ?Possession of detached nutria parts, including nutria tails, by recreational hunters. ?Pelting of recreationally harvested nutria.?Sell of recreationally harvested nutria or any parts from recre-ationally harvested nutria.?Leaving of recreationally harvested nutria carcass in the field, EXCEPT that nutria may be gutted.
DAILY LIMIT?Five per day.
LEGAL GEAR ?Any gear on private lands. Shotguns with non-toxic shot only and rimfire rifles .22 caliber and smaller on WMAs.
EXCEPTIONS?Nutria may be taken on Atchafalaya Delta, Salvador/Timken, Pointe-Aux-Chenes, and Pass-a-Loutre
WMAs Sept. 1 - March 31.?On WMAs during waterfowl seasons, nutria may be taken only by the use of shotguns with shot not larger than F steel.
The Coastwide Nutria Control Program is a separate program and is in no way related to the nutria recreational season. For questions on the Coastwide Nutria Control Program call the Lafayette field office: 337-262-2080
On private Land, there is no limit, but seasonal restrictions on what you can do with the carcass, and they want their cut (buy trapping license):
Landowners or their designees may remove beaver and nutria causing damage to their property without a special permit. Wa-ter set traps and firearms may be used to remove beaver; nutria may be removed by any means (see Nighttime Take of Nutria, Beaver & Outlaw Quadrupeds).? Any nuisance beaver or nutria trapped or shot outside open trapping season cannot be pelted or sold. A trapping license is required to sell or pelt nuisance beavers or nutria taken during open trapping season. Squirrel found destroying commercial crops of pecans may be taken year-round by permit issued by LDWF. Contact the local LDWF field office for details.

and...you have to retrieve the carcasses.
anyone who’s ever tromped a soggy marsh bank knows what a deterrent that is. They either want them gone or they don’t
should be open season, spot them/drop them.
the gators and buzzards will take care of the rest

I made a nutria gumbo one time and it was delicious. I didn't tell me wife or friends until after they ate it.

Neutrals are just a big ugly version of a rabbit. They good eating. Their diet is pretty much grass fed.
