I've truck camped for an elk hunt, then every year my friends and I do an offroad trip through the San Juans where I truck camp. It's super effective if you want to stay mobile and pack up quickly, which is why I enjoy it. They make a lot of really awesome drawer organizers that you can sleep on top of and maintain pretty decent headroom.

I'm a tent next to the truck camper. I always thought I would hate to have to unload the truck before I could go to bed at night.

How much gear do you need?

Only comment is April in the rockies isn't fun. The snow is dirty and icy. Mosquitos follow the snow melt.

September is the best time for the rockies to me. Wake up to elk bugging.

Other than that truck campers sounds fun. I was considering one but went complete opposite and got a motorcycle to camp with.

I guess not much. Ice chest, water, pot, burner, propane. Really not much in there now that I think about it.

I came to say this. Op the weather in Wyoming and Montana in April is not great for camping, I’d consider going south to Utah, Az, and Colorado if anything. NM too.

It’s either going to be very cold in April or the snow melting, neither one of which are good for camping. May is called mid season and it’s a mess. They routinely get snow through June.

Need more info than this. Did you order it from someone? Get plans somewhere?

Thanks,

My podnuh who’s a contractor/ carpenter is building this for me. I just showed him a picture and gave him some artistic freedoms and he’s using this as a draft. Will revisit when it’s completed.

Had a hard shell camper on the 07 megacab for a few years. I stuck a futon mattress on an mdf platform to get it just above the drop in bedliner floor. I put a shelf up against the front window for our overnight bags etc with a small lip to hold stuff in place. We camped extensively with this setup. Best it ever worked was at yellowstone, where we would leave one campground and motor over to the spot where we would spend the next day and the first thing we would do there was take our pick of campsites and then pay for the day. This allowed us to enjoy the evening and sunset before having to rush to find a spot. I had a small tarp that i would drape over the back of the mattress and channel down into the tailgate crack, allowing dust and any rain to shed back out.

I think I would do something like this I was staying for more than a few days.

This would leave your bed mostly open for camp equipment and supplies. Just a thought.

I lived in the mountains in Colorado for a few years. It is indeed a good time to go, just check with some locals before you go to know where the snowmelt/runoff is. You might have spots to camp in mind that might still be inaccessible or full of snow still. Then again you might not, hard to always pinpoint. Ex. The same mountain road I drove in early April one year would have an avalanche over it the next year that didn’t melt until June.

I dont understand what advantage this offers over a tent? Seems like it'd be ultra cramped to me.

I do a significant amount of both. Had a camper on my last tundra, but the real deal is my wife's sequoia. Second and third row lay flat. its basically a $90K tent that has heater you can run before you go to bed, would keep a monsoon out, some asian engineers spent $100 million figuring out how to sound proof, charger for devices in the rear, we put a hot spot in back and get service everywhere. Pull over when you get tired, knock out 5 hrs sleep in the back. Get up and roll out, sometimes if its cold just go straight from the bag in the back to the drivers seat after letting her warm up for a while.
