Anyone ever threw a shell on your truck and took off. Lots of videos on You Tube. Thinking about getting out of PCB in April and head to Montana Wyoming maybe Colorado for 2 or 3 weeks trip. I'm going alone. Any advice Bed Heat water cooking ect.

Don’t use an air mattress if it’s gonna be cold.

If it’s gonna be hot/warm, get you a battery operated fan (dewalt, Milwaukee, etc) to run while sleeping. They make a hot sleeping area tolerable.

I built a sleeping platform early on to allow for more storage but it limited headroom. Sucked getting dressed in the morning.

My setup was in a Tahoe suv.

Buddy of mine does it. He has a cot in the back and he keeps totes for storage underneath it.

His truck has a 12 volt plug in the bed for basic power. I would carry a NOCO jump pack in case.

Mr. Heater makes an indoor safe heater. I own it as well. Works great.

Get a sleeping bag rated for whatever temps you'll be dealing with.

Carry a 5 gallon water jug and water filter.

Whatever stove you prefer that fits with a 20 lb propane tank and 2 cast iron pans. Cast iron Dutch oven is versatile and I'd carry one.

I'd have a jetboil for coffee and dehydrated meals. Pack a small table and a chair.

Space will be tight. Know that going in.

I'll have more.

I dont understand what advantage this offers over a tent? Seems like it'd be ultra cramped to me.

I do.

I use an invoker extra thick sleeping pad.

Have a drawer system, would go with a vaulted top for camping if you’ll put drawers in for the extra head space.

I’ve used a small fan when warm but no heater or anything when cold.

I like it when hunting where I can easily lock it up and go in the morning.

Just always wanted to take avtrip out there. A buddy of mine has done it a few times. Planning on a April trip. Not to cold Nottoway hot. Also gets me out of PCB during Spring Break season. PcB is terrible for locals during this time frame. Cost is basically gas money. Something I've always wanted to do. I think it will be fun. Can take my time plan it out. Stay at campsite when I want to.

When we are road tripping across the country we will routinely sleep in the SUV. Or at least we did before the youngster.

I've camped down to -10 or so. Crack the windows. Sleep on two comforters. Cover with a wool blanket, a high thread count sheet. A down comforter. Another sheet. And then fleece comforter on top of that. Never once was cold.

Now we took an air mattress to arkansas two years ago to go trail riding. With electricity. With a dyson heater. With two hotplates on a metal table running wide open. Froze our asses off.

Buy yourself an arcturus heat reflective tarp. It'll help whether it is hot or cold.

Warmth. Security. Extra half second to grab bear spray.

We just roll our overs up and pack all equipment in. When we stop, unpack, unroll, good to go.

Bear proof for one. OP can eat all the snickers he wants in bed while a tent camper has to keep things cleaner.

Really comes down to your preference. If you want to get to camp and set up a large tent by yourself just to decide later you'd rather a different spot and have to break camp. You'll be putting in more time than someone who can throw a few things back into the truck quickly and move along.

Wind or snow won't be an issue either.

I've slept in a bivy in the mountains so until you've done that you really don't know what cramped is.

I carry a fan everywhere I go. Hotel room, in my tent, in my camper, etc.

I've got an Amacool rechargeable that'd be perfect for his scenario.

I did that once when my tent got soaked. I was pleasantly surprised as to the heat retention of it.

Check out Last Line of Defense on YouTube.

He's got a few different overlanding rigs and does a lot of gear review. His videos are usually shot well and aren't just him talking into the camera. I think he camps mostly out of his Tacoma, but he often has friends tag along in their rigs, so you can see different loadouts for a Taco, a full size Ram, Wrangler, etc. One dude even has a trailer outfitted with a bunch of cooking supplies and so forth.

Plus he's based in CO (Conifer, I think) so there may be some similarities in terms of weather, terrain, etc.

And because he does gear reviews, he's got a ton of discount codes for web ordering from manufacturers if you see anything you want.

1: you arrive ready to crash when it's 2 in the morning.
2: you never have to look for a dry spot in the rain
3: a stove on the tail gate makes one hell of a cook top

(could go on)

It shocked me as well the first time I did it. The only pain in the arse is if you're on an extended trip with a lot of gear you have to unload all your junk to be able to sleep.

Interesting. I'm a tent next to the truck camper. I always thought I would hate to have to unload the truck before I could go to bed at night.

I started out with that idea. However my dad has a shell that would fit my truck. Because it would be just me I'm thinking about just staying in truck bed. Just a guy thing ruffing it.
