My buddy just bought a camp in Dulac last week and has invited me to come fishing for reds.

I've fished my whole life but only freshwater fish in rivers and ponds, mostly catfish and sac-a-lait.

I'm sure he'll tell me what I need to know but I don't want to show up completely clueless.

Thanks!

2 ways:

1. fish just like you would for bass with spinner baits, chatter baits, topwater, and jigs

2. Dead shrimp 1.5 deer under a popping cork 5 feet off the bank. Beat up grass shorelines, points, and cuts.

These guys give a good rundown on common redfish baits you may want to try.

Gold Spoon or Cracked Crab?

Order some of these, Ginger Avenger Inline Spinners.

I won't leave the dock without a few of those and some gold spoons.

-Ride into some dudes lease (don’t anchor ir get hung up)
-find a point or cut
-throw Tsunami
-set hook
-profit??

ETA: Good luck man! I don't fish them much, but I thoroughly enjoy fishing for them on 1 or 2 cold winter mornings when I know they are stacked up in dead end canals and am tired of not killing ducks.

A hook in the mouth is the easiest way. Hooking 'em thru the tail or fin is really difficult to do consistently.

What about gear? What should I bring that I wouldn’t normally for freshwater?

Braided line?

I use braided line all the time. Catch a few little crab at the bank, smash them, and use that on a hook. Cracked crab is like crack to redfish.

-Boga Grip
-a good filet knife
-aluminum foil

20 or 30# braid is what I have on all of my reels for bass and they are the same thing I use for reds (besides my punching rod)

Just got back from a guided Redfish trip. We did these 2 methods and limited out.

We used to catch them when they were tailing in the shallows in Big Lake and Moss Lake. We'd see the tail and dorsal break the surface and throw a few feet in front with either a spoon or plastic shrimp.

That and working the birds over Big Lake using a popping cork with a white/red tail grub....smoked them there too.

Redfish are easy to catch if they are there. They eat pretty much everything. Starting out, i'd stick to live and dead bait. Their favorites are live finger mullet, cut mullet, blue crab, live shrimp, even dead shrimp.

1. Easiest way is dead shrimp under slip cork in cuts with moving water.

2. Fish like you would for bass.

I like using 20 lb Powerpro braided w/ medium or medium heavy rods.

South Carolina redfish prefer dead shrimp over any other bait I ever tried. The problem is that everything else in the water also likes shrimp. So if you are just looking to get a tug on the line from whatever is biting, along with a couple of redfish, use dead shrimp on the bottom. Use a circle hook or kahle hook to avoid gut-hooking the ones that you must release.

If you are specifically targeting reds and don't want to catch anything else, then go with lures. I always had the best luck with scented soft plastics such as Exude or Gulp products.
