Thoughts on acreage in Stennis Buffer Zone?Posted by MaxDraft on 2/23/21 at 7:27 pm

I've found about 80 acres of land in the Stennis Space Center buffer zone in Kiln, MS for sale. I'm having a hard time finding clear answers on what restrictions are in place for the buffer zone itself. I've googled it a hundred different ways. I've asked the realtor, but haven't received a reply back yet.
Does anyone know the ins and out of the BZ? I would use the property for hunting and trail riding. Thanks

I’d like to know myself just out of curiosity. I’d think shooting guns would not be allowed.

There are numerous hunting leases inside the zone. Also a shooting range. I think the buffer zone is no permanent dwellings but a camper may be fine for a hunting spot.

Found this in an article about the buffer zone on NASA.gov
quote:
the government’s easement limits only the ability to place habitable structures on property in the buffer zone, and that buffer zone landowners retain all other property rights.

Yeah, I read that, too. Was hoping to find an official document that clearly spells it all out.

I looked at a bunch of timber land in the buffer zone right after Katrina. I had a copy of the easement at one time. As I remember it basically prohibits 4 sided structures. So horse stalls are ok in a three sided configuration. But you can't close it in all the way. Skinning racks, tractor shed, etc. All ok as long as you limit them to 3 sides.
Side note: the people I met who hunt there may be the trashiest people I have ever met in the history of Trashidom. I'm talking about a Level 5 rough crew.
Side note #2: While looking at the Timber I got stuck. Walked out. Found a road. Walked along it. Got picked up and temporarily "detained" by security. They checked me for warrants and released me. Came back for my truck the next day and it had been shot full of holes. My buddy drove me to town and I bought a new truck. As far as I know it's still there.

quote:Heard similar stories from many people over the years, even from an very connected italian american family that owned land inside and outside the buffer(a family I wouldn't mess with even on a bet) - they had a winnebago torched in the 80s while they were all out hunting. THere are some fairly bizarre stories from a certain Naval unit that on occasion trains there(I think they keep a full time training cadre there, or they used to) with run ins will locals. As a kid this area gave me a very very negative perception of MS.

My street cred just went up. By the way, we are not nearly half as rough as the dog runners from perry florida, But I agree, rough crew

Yeah they do swift boat training on the Pearl River and use the airport @ stennis to take off on covert trips to South America. Have heard stories where they come back with a lot of warped barrels from high caliber guns.

Area has had it's fair share of outlaws since before prohibition. Kiln was a mecca for moonshine production.

I can't verify but it's what I heard. This would be back in late 90's early 2000's. 50 cal Ma Deuce type guns. Cocaine counter ops.

Place is trashy. We did a machine gun shoot on "private" land in the BZ once. It was the nastiest, trashiest place and I am 99% sure the people who claimed it was their land were lying. Cash doesn't bounce and you can't get a chargeback on it, we ghosted the clients after the shoot.
The old Buffer zone range was HORRIBLE but they shut that down... then they moved it down the street and shut it down again. I think they did it at least 3 times. People would have work days out there and they would build shooting benches and target stands, the next weekend they would be shot to shite. I think people did it just to keep other people from coming back onto "their" land.

Pirates used to kick it back there to hideout and it’s rumored to have buried treasure there.

We had a pretty lively conversation about the old Buffer Zone "Range" some 8 years back and I went out there to check it out one day... This was my thread I posted about it.
