Either pick your flavor Chinese model or Yamaha/Honda

The yamaha TT-110 is a great little bike

Yup. Buy a Honda or Yamaha 4-stroke and that thing will still be bulletproof when he has his own kids.

Friendly Powersports in Slidell has both Honda and Yamaha.

Honda 50. Bought my son one when he was 5. He is 14 now and still rides it, as do I. Has progressed over the years, tall bars, 12" wheels, taller suspension, 88cc big bore with a cam. Fun little bike.

I'd be hesitant on buying a 50cc because an 8 year old will probably outgrow a 50 pretty quick. Unless you're shopping for a used one and find a good deal knowing he'll probably get a year or 2 out of it before needing a bigger bike.

Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki all make 4 stroke 110cc trail bikes that he'd be able to get at least 5-6 years out of before outgrowing it.

What about Monster Moto in Ruston? Not sure if they're manufacturing there yet, but they should be close.

Buy the first one used. He will drop it, bang it up, tear crap off of it as he learns how to handle it.

That is my advice to any first time rider. No sense tearing up a brand new bike while learning.

Other advice, all small Hondas are now made in Taiwan. Yamahas are still J vin, made in Japan.

I'd buy yamaha for the smaller bikes. Hands for the bigger bikes.

My oldest (10 years old) has been on a bike (no training wheels) since he was 4....his last bike was a KLX110 that we got when he was about 7. Great bike, hasn’t given a lick of trouble and it’s spent just about as much time in the air as it has on the ground.

His abilities have significantly outgrown the bike, so we moved him to a 2 stroke 100 this year. It’s been great, but a clutch bike is not for a first timer.

Our friends have a 9 year old that quickly outgrew his 70.

We have an 8 year old neighbor that rides our PW50 pretty regularly. But his abilities far exceed the 50, even though he physically fits it ok.

Bottom line- it depends a lot on the kids size. A 70 is likely perfect to start, but plan on stepping up soon if he likes it.

I am a big fan of new if you can swing it. Most people “have a buddy” who knows about bikes and they all seem to have molested the bike in one way or another.

Craigslist. 8 yo? I suggest a Kawasaki or Suzuki 110. The newer ones are a bit More pricey but a 05-2012 will serve you good.
They are simple 4 stroke motors that, if treated right, will never need serious engine repairs.
With that said, don’t buy a 2005 110cc that’s been ragged out and kept in the shed by Joe Bobs kid jimmy bob and ridden ever day.
If it’s owned by somebody who lets their scared kid ride it twice a year and is kept in the garage and it looks brand new still, don’t worry about the year.
Good luck and definitely buy the kid a bike!
Dad got me a Honda 70cc that I rode until I got into motocross and needed something stronger. But I raced the 70cc for a year or so before he upgraded me

Got my son a good condition Kawasaki KLX110 off FB. He loves it. No clutch, 4 stroke. Heck, I love riding it myself.

If you are talking about an old fat tire, Briggs and Stratton, type mini-bike, I saw some cool looking ones at Tractor Supply the other day.

I didn't look really close, I just thought they looked cool for a kid. They kind of reminded me of the old ROKU ones, but more modern looking.
