I am tossing around the idea or buying/building a 6.5 Grendel or buying a Savage MSR in 6.5 Creedmore to set up for night time hog hunting. What I'm having the most trouble with is settling on a scope. I know zero about thermal or night vision but from watching videos it seems thermal is the way to go. I was also leaning toward a clip on but they cost more than a dedicated thermal scope. The two scopes that intrigues me the most are the ATN THOR HD in 50mm (undecided on power due to not knowing how far they are effective) and the clip on Armasight Apollo. Both are around $3500. Does anyone here have experience in this arena? First hand experience is unbeatable and I have none to speak of. Also, are there any other scope options that may be less expensive? Being I've never done it I'd hate to spend $3500 for a paperweight.

Go see Tony at Thompson Creek Sporting goods Jackson, La.

He does it, he sells it. A great resource, take advantage of someone who knows what it's all about....

I have no interest in his business, just trying to save you some time...

Check out the Pulsar thermal lineup. Their clip ons are a better quality than the ones you mentioned but won’t break the bank like a FLIR.

Those rifle calibers mentioned will outshoot an ATN.

Flir has been in the game a long time and they are fool proof and rugged as hell, very good scope for the money. If you want something a little more high end then IR Hunter is the way to go, I've hunted with several and it doesn't get much better than the IR hunter.

I will add if you are doing a lot of night time hunting then I would recommend gettin a thermal monocular for scanning/locating hogs. An AR can get a little cumbersome if you are trying to scan fields for a couple hours

What does this mean?

Means your ATN will only be able to give you quality range view up to about 300 yards.

Nevermind. Just pulled the trigger on the Leupold LTO Tracker.

Pulsar thermals were my choice.

I use a RXQ30V for shooting and a XQ30V monocular for scanning. You can buy each one of those from Euro Optic right now for $1625

I would stick with the 6.5 Grendel if it's for night time hog hunting. At night with a thermal you're not going to be shooting far enough to justify the extra weight of the creed. You could do a 12/12.5 Grendel that makes for a nice lightweight and easily maneuverable hog hammer that's going to be making 1k ft lb of energy still at 300yd, which unless you about to drop some serious coin on a thermal is well past what you're going to be able to positively identify as far as targets go.

this is exactly what i just finished building. its my first pistol build and with 2 sbr lowers in the safe i cant imagine filing any more form 1's until they make it harder to build pistols or easier to file Form 1's

going to be running my triji IR Hunter MkIII on it

I actually picked up a 6.5 Grendel yesterday. I did go kind of cheap but I only paid $647 for a complete lower and upper. Lower is a Ruger and the upper is a Bear Creek with a 16" fluted 5R barrel. I figure I couldn't go wrong at that price and it's super light. Worst comes to worst I'll buy another barrel if it doesn't shoot tight enough. On the thermal, the guy that I deal with for buying guns has an Armasight PTS233 ordered that I'm going to look at. I'm not sure it's going to be what I'm looking for but it's cheap for thermal at $2199.

I have a buddy of mine that just bought a Pulsar XQ30 and he said to make sure to get the one that's blue tinted. Do you have any idea what he's talking about?

I'm don't know of any blue tinting. Does he have the xq30 sight or monocular? The screen on my RXQ30V is tinted green.

He has the sight. He actually carried it back to the Bass Pro in Rockwall and returned it to get the color he was looking for. I was under the impression that Model had a green view also.
