I’ve got a little itch for a better thermal scanner. Targets will range from 20 to 200 yards potentially with an average of 75 yards but median of about 50 yards.

I currently have a 160 (horizontal) resolution with 2.5 base magnification. The field of view is too small for me so I’m thinking of upgrading to a 320 or 384 resolution model with base magnification of around 2 or 3. Even a 320 at 3x mag will have a 50% bigger field of view and be much clearer than what I have now. A 320 at 2x mag will have about 100% bigger FOV. I am familiar with ATN products but open to any brand.

I am hoping you would have great recommendations backed up by experience. I’m expecting to spend over a grand but hoping less than 2. So what sayeth ye?

Pulsar Axion 2 XQ35 (385 res 17 micron) or XG35 (640 res 12 micron).
They come with or without LRF. The new f/1.0 lense is great. They both have the <40mk sensor but I wish they would have used the new <25mK.
Both have color pallets, wifi recording...

I asked this same question to a buddy that works in the night vision / defense industry. He knows his business. This is going to sound simplistic but stick with me.

He explained that what makes a thermal device "good" is the SIZE of the objective lens. They coat the objective with some element (I can't recall the name) that costs a ton of $$$ and is what makes the device work. He said to always look at the relative size of the objective lens because there are some name brands that have tiny objectives. No matter how good the rest of the device, it won't work well if the objective is tiny. Kind of like having a $10,000 stereo system with $50 speakers.

His recommendation, FOR THE MONEY because there are obviously better out there for much more, is the Bering Optics Hogster.

Cheapest Option
The one to get if you can bust past $2k

I think he is looking for a monocular for scanning targets not a weapon sight.
