Awesome thanks! I read some of the google reviews from the past two years and crowds were mentioned from day hikers on the AT. Has that been an issue lately?

Again, I'm all for this even with my kids but someone in our group may demand a facility (i.e. maintained campground).

Crowds are kind of a relative term. For the at. It is busy but no more than your camp site. But if you don't camp at this crossing and somewhere else on the road, you will only see a car pass every once in a while during the day. Probably some motorcycles and mountain bikers, but they stay on the road. You would be slightly off.

When I say water, you would still need a filter. Would a porta potty work?

Possible, but not probable.

The facilities at Cooper Creek Campground are probably as "primitive" as we'll be able to go this trip. That may even be a stretch and we may end up at De Soto Campground.

You might check out tallulah falls area. Might be more stuff to do with kids. Lots of short hikes. Panther creek falls is right down the street. 3,5 in. But pretty cool.
