Have never fished Grand Isle. My son is at an age now where he can go with me. Have always wanted to try surf fishing and was thinking of tent camping at the state park. May bring our 2 man kayak and fish some marsh in the area if weather permits. Just looking for any advice/watch outs for a first timer to Grand Isle. Thanks in advance.

Come prepared to battle the mosquitoes like they are the 7 plagues of hell. I don’t mean spray either. Full coverage clothes, netting, the whole 9 yards.

I should add that we will be going in July. If that matters.

Hot as hell. Did it once, never crossed my mind to do it again.

I've posted this before about camping on Grand Isle:

Bring a wooden stake, a hammer, and a 6 foot length of rope. Before dark, hammer the stake into the ground. Tie one end of the rope to the wooden stake and the other end around your ankle. Doing this will prevent the mosquitoes from carrying you off into the marsh.

Hmm...that bad huh? A 12 year old is not going to last long with that. May have to re-think this

People can be dramatic, they are bad though
Put some spray on, where a light long sleeve shirt, fish all day long and you'll never know. Make sure you leave the netting around the tent all day, don't want them to get in there when it's bedtime
Also bring plenty of ice, shite melts fast out there

its going to be brutally hot and miserable. a kid who is used to camping will tough it out and man up as long as the rest is positive like fishing crabbing, fun activities, but the mosquitoes are fierce, the gnats are relentless, and a tent on the beach you will get eaten up something terrible by the sand fleas.

i dont want to be the one to tell you to cancel but might i suggest you switch plans to stay in a rental so the kid has a better go of it free from bugs and sleeping in bed with a/c.

camping on the beach is best done in spring and fall not the heat of summer

I’ve done it...but I won’t do it again. I had an ac rigged through the tent so I was cool, but those motha lovin’ mosquitoes...damn. Deep woods spray, skin so soft, regular off, towards day break I was ready to douse myself in gasoline if it would’ve helped. I had to air my tent out for a week to get all the smell from different sprays out.

I did it once before. Did catch a lot of fish but it would be so damn hot we would go ride around in truck just to get some air conditioner. I would not do again.

I stayed at Ricky's Motel a few times. It was decent.

Spend a night in your back yard this summer as preparation and an experiment. If you can do that, go on a trip.

I’d try and camp in the fall.

CajunHideaway will treat you right or splurge at Hurricane Hole with a pool and some hoes for the boy.

IF THAT MATTERS??? Are you from here and not know how hot July is in La.? Unless your idea of camping is to rent a cabin, I'd definitely not want to be part of it, even along the coast.

Everyone’s experience is similar to mine. In high school we thought it was a great idea. Even after multiple boxes of red dog and natural ice we ended up crammed into vehicles trying to sleep. One guy ran out of gas trying to run his A/C. Another was swatting skeeters in the truck and knocked a window out on accident with a beer bottle. Would not do again

Did it many times when I was younger - been right at about 15-16 years since I’ve done it. Generally when I have done it I have fished all night - or well into the night.

If the fishing is not great it can be sheer misery

And I’m a fairly hardy fella

The last 2 times I did it we went down with about a dozen people. - only 1-2 would stay a second night...

Set up tent but get a place with Ac to sleep and a place to hide from lightning

I’ve always wanted to camp on last island......probably would have similar results.
