really got the bug to pick one up. I have the fungible cash and I've always wanted one, plus I'd love to have a semi-auto .308 with irons.

but I really would just be buying it because I want one and thats a fair amount of money to spend just because.

Your with irons comment won me over. It is far from my favorite semi .308, but with irons works great.

I go back and forth every year
it's heavy and I really don't have a clue what I'd use it for besides paper
but I do want one

Buy it. Life's short. You've earned it.

With sling and a full magazine, you're over 10 pounds.

Honestly, I love them, but I'd save my pennies for a AR-10/LR308.

I'm with ace that I would go with an AR10 just for the reduced weight and ease of mounting optics.

But there's something super satisfying about that "ping" from the op rod on every shot with an M1A. I'll honestly probably buy one down the road just for that satisfying noise.

And just for the record, this is the worst place to be talked out of buying a nice gun. But I'm sure you had no idea that would happen...

Easy. If you want a handy .308 rifle with irons then get a Ruger GSR. If you want a semi-auto .308 with irons get a Loaded M1A. The GSR is light so running magazine after magazine of .308 can become a little bit of a chore but it's such a fun rifle to handle and the factory irons are excellent. M1A soaks up enough recoil to make it easy to burn though some .308 and the iron sights are very good (though I think the GSR's are a little better). Going to a Scout model means getting a rifle that is not as quick to handle as a GSR, nearly as punishing on recoil, and more difficult to shoot accurately if you really like to try to stretch the yardage to the 250 - 300 yd range with irons.

I've got the polymer version in .308. Love it. The muzzle brake makes everyone next to you at the range need to change their pants after you fire it though.

No way. It is a great rifle.

You'll amaze yourself with how well you do with the irons.

For years I've considered a scope on my standard model but each time I go out I decide stock sights are too much fun to change anything. FWIW I've never had a single problem with the gun either.

This is not the place to come to for someone to talk you out of buying things. Unless said thing is a known piece of shite, no one is going to talk you down from the ledge.

You know this.

An M1A is one of the many, many guns I'd like to have but probably will never get around to buy one.

Ok, you should get a M1A National Match instead. I love mine.

nope, everyone with good taste needs to own an M1A.
look at them as an AR for grown ups (jk).
i had a full battle sized one years ago: synth stock, parkerized finished. the drum sight was really accurate and i supprised myself with some of the groups i shot at +300 yds

If 10 pounds = good, then 12 pounds is even better?

My buddy has one with the full length front rails, it's ridiculously heavy. Are you planning to shoot from bench rest or what?

You can never have too many guns. Never.

Falcons blew a 28-3 lead.

It's mostly a toy but will probably take it out in the woods once in awhile and walk deer.

I'm used to carrying around my 700 vtr which is 10lbs+ with the scope. I want one with irons that's reasonable out to 200-300 yds so I can make closer shots easier.

I want to stay .308 so I don't have to buy more ammo.
