Meaning, when do you spray weed killer, bush hog, plant, fertilize and lime if you do so?

I would really like to invest to have successful plots next season since I now live where I hunt and have plenty of time to work on them.

We bush hog a few times toward the end of summer and its usually mid/late September we'll scrape off the cut up grass , disc, plant/fertilize then cover.
Then its pray for rain time.

I'm extremely sandy in SW Alabama. This summer I'm planting sun hemp so I have more plant mass to disc into the ground. Steadily getting better. Going to try and rent a lime spreader for the massive amount of lime I'm sure I'll need after I send in my soil samples. Last year we spread with the wrong equipment and it sucked.

My first step is going to be to reclaim some sapling and small tree area of over-run field. Then cut it with a mower this spring.

We bushhogged it twice in late July and August. Sprayed it in early September and planted it in early August with lime over the top after we planted. Used a lime buggy from the local CO-OP.

Most people don't realize you can do this. I know if you buy the feed from the co-op in Slaughter its something like $25 to rent the hopper.

I'm in south central MS, mostly pine, so take it for what it's worth.

Lime is gonna have the single biggest impact for a food plot in the piney woods. Get a soil sample now and do what it recommends ASAP. You want to spreading lime well in advance of planting. I used pellet lime on some small plots this year and they look fantastic right now compared to those that weren't limed. Pellet lime is expensive so if you can get a spreader truck and do it right, that's the way to go.

The rest I won't go into because it varies based on when everyone is in town, and there's usually not much thought put into it. We average planting sometime around mid October and I've never felt like it was too late.

How did you know how much lime to get and spread?

Soil test. Most any co-op that sells lime will test the soil for free and recommend how much.

But in south MS, a shite ton is a good rule of thumb.
