Going to OB in mid Oct. my six year old likes to fish. Anyway we could catch some fish from the beach while the kids play? Any suggestions on bait or pole setups?

If your going to orange beach there is a pier you can fish from in Gulf Shores. Most people use cigar minnows or live shrimp and catch a variety of salt water species.

I've beach fished in Perdido a few times. We used a triangle weight to keep it out there. Used market bait and caught trash fish and some sharks(small). Still gave us something to do while the girls were sunning.
Watch out for the gulls, keep the bait covered, don't play with a caught fish or leave it unattended for a short time, the gulls will come in.
Hope y'all have a good time.

watch some of these videos, I was looking for the couple who surf/kayak fishes a lot in Perdido Key which should be the same as orange.

We usually catch sand fleas on the beach then throw them in the surf with a weight for pompano. You can chunk a spoon as far as possible and get some action off the beach also.

I love going in the mornings during summer trips. Great way to watch sunrise and we always catch at least something, pompano or catfish. Spinning rod and a pompano rig with a pyramid weight, we used dead shrimp- all available at the Walmart in Gulf Shores.

Use a small Carolina rig with a small hook and put a small piece of peeled shrimp on the hook. Been doing this in the surf for many years in Gulf Shores and catching good amounts of Whitings (Channel Mullets). They are fun to catch & are excellent eating. Good luck.

Headed there myself mid October. In May we fished with dead shrimp and fish bite on pompano rigs. Caught two delicious Pompano and a lot of blue fish we threw back. Plan to do the same next month. Good luck.

I bring my bass rigs and throw topwater baits and gotcha plugs when I dont feel like messing with dead shrimp. Lots of ladyfish, bluefish, and hardtails to be be caught. I have caught some nice flounder on sand fleas and dead shrimp in the past on carolina rigs.

here is a site with tips for fishing for whiting in Florida. This should translate To OB reasonably well.

https://www.turncrafter.com/SGI/fish_for_whiting.htm

ANy cheap saltwater rig should work for one trip, if you want something g to keep you could get a Penn pursuit combo for under $100. Also, I’d suggest a 7 foot or longer rod.
Shrimp or cut squid are good bait choices. You can probably find brined shrimp at the super Walmart in GS. There are several marinas in OB to by bait and tackle as well.

Keep in mind that catfish are almost inevitable at some point. Enjoy

Throw shrimp, squid and mullet on a pyramid or spider rig any time of the day. You can buy them at Top Gun Tackle or Walmarks. Haul it out as far as you can get it and let it marinate. Just dont be the dutchbag that tries to fish mid-day in the middle of a shitload of people.

Get a $20 spinning rig from Walmart and throw it away the morning that you leave.

Wake up early, before the sun comes up, and be on the beach for the ladyfish run. Throw something small and shiny like a spoon or something, they are nasty but fun as hell to catch. Just cast out and reel in as fast as you can. You will see them popping along the beach.

You can also fish under the pass bridge, throw at the pilings, Ive caught big blues and little reds there.

I will be down there next week from the 7th to the 11th in Fort Morgan.

How long you going to be there and how close to the beach are you staying? I can hook you up with beach cart, rods, and tackle. Fishing has been good from the surf lately and should get better with some cooler temps. I don’t mind letting you borrow everything you need.

I have killed the fish at the caribe docks at that time. White trout, specs and redfish as fast as I could bait the hooks. You can usually get live shrimp at bait shop next door. Just walk across to the Harbour docks. The two middle ones are the best

Also, if you can spare a few hours, go all the way to the end of Fort Morgan Rd and fish behind the Fort.

I have a thread about this on the OB from a few years back.

Fish the distinct line where the gulf and the bay meet. I used gulp shrimp (new penny) and caught specs, reds, big black drums.

I have been using different water level MirrOlures with a red head white body that has produced some catches in the surf. Nothing great yet but always a fish.

Perdido years ago same experience with the birds, the gulls were after my bait and the cranes were trying to snap the fish off my line. Never experienced quite that level of aggression from birds on the beach before.

I have a friend there right now. Been sending me pics He has caught a pompano, some catfish, a couple of croaker, what appeared to be a young grouper, and a lady fish. He also caught some blue crabs in the crab trap he put out. This is all from the beach in gulf shores. He is using cut bait of some sort and fish bites.
