This will be for a 35 Whelan handi-rifle that's rarely used. Looking for something in 3-9x40. Durability is the biggest factor, the last $99 bushnell I put on it lasted about 15 shots before a lens fell out. I realize I probably need to go up from there but how much? This is a backup gun and/or for my dad when he decides he wants to gun hunt about twice a year.

I'm not looking for crystal clarity, just something that will hold a zero and not fall apart. TIA

Primary Arms has the Nikon 3-9x40 on sale for $99 for black friday. It will also be that price locally if oyu have an Academy on Black Friday. Highly recommend it at the $99 price. Great optics. Never heard of anyone having problems with Nikon scopes shaking apart.

Vortex Crossfire II 3-9x40 with Dead-Hold BDC Reticle. It is $150 at cabelas but I would spend the extra $20 and get the 3-9x50.

Using Hornady 200gr or Barnes VOR-TX 180gr ammo, the hash marks line up pretty damn perfectly out to 400 yards with a 100 yard zero. Ex.

(@ 9 power)

Scope Mark.................................................Barnes Drop

center (100yards)..............................................zero

1st hash (200yds) 3"drop....................................3.4"

2nd hash (300yds) 13.5"....................................13.5"

3rd hash (400yds) 30"........................................31.9"

top of bottom post (500yds) 55"..........................61.7"

So you could sight in at 100 yards, and actually use the hash marks out to 400 yards. This would be nice on a gun that doesn't get shot much, therefore not having intimate knowledge of the gun's ballistics.

Also, Vortex makes pretty good scopes and have a fantastic warranty.

I put a Nikon Prostaff 3x9x50 on my 35 Whelen 4 or 5 years ago and never had a problem. I think they list for $199 but I caught it on sale for $149. Same scope I have on my .270 and for the price, they’re hard to beat. IMO

Thanks for the breakdown, I'm not opposed to a vortex and hear good things but that prostaff at $99 might be too good to pass up.

I have the Vortex Diamondback HP 4-16x42 on my CVA Scout in 35 whelen. Probably 20 shots through it so far and no issues. Worked great on my elk in Colorado.

This. I’m not one to spend a lot on scopes. I have a couple of these and they do just fine.
