I'm a big hunter but haven't been hardcore into fishing since I was a kid. I've recently bought a fishing yak and am wanting to get set up right for fishing. I'm covered on rods and reels but have a pretty pitiful collection of tackle. I'm wanting to just start from scratch and buy all new stuff including a tackle box/bag suited for kayak fishing as well as all new tackle as well. My main species targets in north Mississippi would be bass, crappie, and catfish. I'm familiar with what setups I like for crappie and catfish but with all the new items available for targeting bass compared to what was available when I was a kid I thought it would be a good idea to enlist the experts on the OB. With that in mind, what would the OB recommend to buy to be very well covered on tackle. I have $500 in Cabelas bucks I would like to use and really do this right, suggestions?

I would go with:

-some speed craws such as havoc pit poss or sweet beavers. I like pumpkin, junebug, and blue colors.
-A few rattle traps and crank baits. Silver and baby bass work good for me.
-a few lizards and brush hogs. Watermelon
-a few senkos. Watermelon
-a few worms. Red shad
- few spinnerbaits. I really like terminator but there are several other good ones white/ chartreuse
- few football jigs. Pumpkin and blue colors.
And obviously the hooks and weights and terminal tackle needed. The colors I mention are what works for me best in central la in relatively shallow water. Different water conditions will make some colors more or less effective so there will be some trial and error with it. Good luck

Dark big senko worms for muddy water, a big dark jig for muddy water, creature baits in various colors, crankbaits rated for different depths from 3ft to deep diving, rattle traps in various colors and weights, spinner baits in various colors and weights, couple buzz baits, a good top water frog, a couple spoons, some offset j hooks, small o rings to wacky rig the senko’s, bullet weights, pack of white/blue flukes, various color/length worms (I prefer culprit red Shad), and a chatterbait.
That’s probably all the tackle I’d care to try while bass fishing.
I like prerigged bottom fishing leaders for catfish with circle hooks, and I like beatlespins with chartreuse grubs for crappie. Or live bait.

I like the modular plano style tackle boxes. Cabelas has some nice ones that were recently on sale.

You’re gonna regret this

Looks like you’re getting plenty of good advice, the only thing I’ll add is that after spending more than I’d like to admit on tackle, 90% of my fish still come on a Texas rigged green pumpkin worm. That will catch bass from Florida to California.

Everything else in your box is gonna depend on the places you fish and what you enjoy. I’d suggest starting slow with the worm and just getting out on the water. The vegitation and structure on your lake/river are gonna point you towards new techniques.Try to avoid the temptation to just grab shite off the shelf at academy, instead build on what you think might work after getting the lay of the land. That’s easier said than done but I wish someone had told me that 10 years ago, I’d own way less dumb shite that I never use.
