Looking for options for my son who is 6 to get started deer hunting.

Remington Model 7 youth in .243
I actually have the same gun for myself in 7mm-08.

Find one with a short LOP. As for caliber, I recommend a .308 or 7mm-08 with managed recoil rounds. This of course depends on his size. If smaller framed, a 300AAC.

My son that just turned 7 shoots a compact Tikka in .260 and handles it great

My children have shot a Savage Axis youth in 7mm-08 since that age and have stacked deer like cord wood.
When they were small the reduced recoil hornady rounds were nice. Now they shoot fusion 140s.
All girls btw.
P.S. If you are about to buy a rifle, my 11/30/2020 advice is find a couple calibers you are comfortable with, then go online and find whichever you can buy a shitepile of ammo in. Buy the ammo then find a gun. Can't hardly find common ammo these days.

We stumbled on a Ruger American in 300 blk out several years ago and it has been awesome.
My kids both killed 10 pts with it last year and my son has racked up a bunch of nice deer the last few years.
I have a savage bolt action 22 we set up the same to practice at the house

This is correct.
Ammo is hard to find in any caliber, and I doubt it gets easier anytime soon

I have an AR15 in 6.5 Grendel that I've hunted with, so I recently picked up a Ruger Ranch rifle in 6.5 Grendel for my kid to use. Very low recoil.

Anything in 7mm-08 or 6.5 creddmoor that has a short enough stock to fit well.

I started with a Marlin lever action 30/30...make,that kid feel like a real Cowboy!
I’ve killed more deer with that gun, than my 30.06...but I quit deer hunting years ago,

What he said, 6.5 seems to be on the shelf more than others I guess just because they know the market is there with all the 6.5s sold in the last few years.
I doubt you can find a 6.5 in a youth model so you may have to consider a full size cut down the stock and replace later with a full size.

At 6, my son shot a H&R single shot .223. He shot at and killed two deer with it.
At 7, he started with a Ruger Compact .308. Killed a whole bunch of deer with it.
Good options are an AR with adjustable stock.
WBY Vanguard in .308 that comes with a youth and an adult stock.

Currently my daughter (6) is shooting my AR in 6.5 grendel with a burris ff3. She killed her first deer a couple weeks ago.
Next year I will probably move her to my Ruger American Ranch in 300blk with a traditional scope. Or I have a browning xbolt micro in 7-08. Plenty of options for kids, but I love the grendel.

My son killed his 1st with a AR in 6.8spc. He killed another with that gun on Sat. He's also used a 6.5 grendel.
All three were DRT. Not a single step.

A .243 is plenty in the south.

Just wanted to draw attention to the dumbass downvoting the AR suggestions.

Ammo is in very short supply right now. I would make sure I could locate ammo before purchasing. A buddy bought one a few weeks ago and can't shoot because he can't find any ammo.

Starter rifle or starter deer gun? I'm currently of the opinion it is wise to start a kid shooting a smaller caliber then a deer rifle for a few years. Something like a .22 or .223 with almost no kick. Get comfortable shooting, learning form and fit, etc. Then move them up to something larger.
