Squirrel hunting
Planning on going out for a few tree rats this weekend. Haven't gone since I was a kid. Will be going to big branch NWR, any tips on where to go? Shotgun or .22lr? Not sure how thick it is in there, mainly scouting for next deer season but figure i may as well see if i can add something to it.

re: Squirrel hunting
I always thought hunting with a 22 is a lot more fun, but if the area is really thick, a shotgun makes it easier.

re: Squirrel hunting
I scout first, then go out before dawn and wait. It's a wonderful time of day. Where I'm at, squirrels are moving between 6:30 and 7am. I take my 22 most days, but will slip out my Benelli on occasion.

Love communing with nature.

Slime pickings out there on anything other than hogs.

re: Squirrel hunting
I haven't been out there but it's only a couple miles from my house so figured I'd give it a shot, on the Mandeville side.

Planning on bow hunting out there next season

One warning - snakes are out on the occasional warm day. While you're looking up remember to also look down!

re: Squirrel hunting
you can go hog hunting with the 22 it should take them down plus it can clear out the land for deer season.

re: Squirrel hunting
I'm going to do a squirrel hunt on Sunday in Pearl River WMA. Any idea how flooded that place still is? Just going to walk in off of Old Hwy 11

re: Squirrel hunting
I like to hunt WMA's and refuges too. Never understood why some hunters just randomly go around shooting up nests. One thing if it's private land or even if you see the squirrel go in, but far too many folks just shoot nests and call that hunting.

Water has been falling out the past few days, you should be fine in the walk in

re: Squirrel hunting
Can one go in the PR WMA just to hog hunt using a rifle or is it still you can only use a firearm that is legal for whatever season is open? I can't go in with a 30-30 say.

Still can only use weapons for whatever season is open. If I see one, I'll try to take a hog with the .22, provided I get a good shot.

re: Squirrel hunting
I clarified this rule with Mr. Green jeans a couple years ago.

I've seen nutria out there and wondered if I could have my 17 in case I wanted to take one.

He said it's all good as long as the season is open that that particular gun can be legally used for, it is fine. Keep it in the case, unloaded when not in use.
