Spinoff thread on gas engine MPG..

After reading the thread on diesel mpg, it got me wondering.
I have an 08 Silverado 4X4 with a 5.3L. Would it be worth it for me to get some sort of programmer to try and better my gas mileage? I spend a lot of time in the highway and put about 30k miles a year on it.
I don't drive real hard and get about 18 mpg right now.

You will get slightly better MPG's if you can make yourself keep your foot out of it, but you'll be paying more for gas (most tunes require 93 octane) so the savings are nil at best.
The extra umph is worth it to some. Most people I know get them, run them for about 6 months, and then take them back off because they get tired of paying for premium gas.
ETA: Now a custom tune is a different monster and can pay off big time if your truck is already out of warranty.

fricking 18? I have a brand new 2wd and am just getting 15mpg. This could be due though to my firm belief if given the chance I would become the most dominant Nascar driver to ever grace the track and do it by my 2nd year.

Going to do a custom tune, intake, exhaust and maybe headers as soon as my warranty is up.

Yea if doesn't get better soon I am taking it in and having them look to see what ratio it is set at. Thinking I may have gotten one that was supposed to be shipped out west or something.
Have heard it takes awhile to get up, only have 6k on it.

Yea. It's a crate engine. Somewhere between 330 and 350hp at the flywheel.
