Wolf spiders are cool. they don't spin webs but run down their prey of small insects.

Yep. My garden is full of them. And they are welcome.

ETA: A couple years ago I took some pictures of a big wolf spider with a cheap macro lens I had for my phone.

Thanks for including the quarter for size comparison. [Thought standard practice here was the foot?]

In this case the foot was more likely the dispenser of justice, the defender of life and limb, the weapon of choice.

Apparently his flame thrower was in the shop for retooling.

re: Spider ID
I witnessed a wolf spider eating a brown recluse in my bathroom last year. So I had to look it up and found out they indeed will hunt and kill them. So I never kill wolf spiders, ever. I'll relocate them outside because they get tarantula sized, but I won't kill them.

Jumping spiders do the same, so I don't even bother removing them from the house when I find them. It took a while to get the wife comfortable with that but it's all good now.

We live tucked among a shitload of white oaks and the invasion of fiddlebacks is never ending so I'll take every bit of help I can get. I have three cats that help, plus the beneficial spiders, and still kill at least two or three recluses every week year round. I've bombed and killed them but more just come in to replace the dead. It's a neverending fight.

Did this one time at my mom and dad's house. Walked out the front door and saw the gigantic spider. Stepped on it and probably a thousand tiny spiders went scurrying everywhere, and in the house.
I panicked at first, as i was overwhelmed with the amount of tiny spiders that took off, then just started stomping everywhere.

Glad it wasn't my house.

Are these the spiders that reflect green with their eyes when you hit them with a LED light at night?

There's a spot on my hunting property that looks like I'm going to die when I go through it.

That spider was your friend and you killed him. I have them on my front porch eating all the bugs. They are my furry little porch puppies.
