Any of you guys who hunt south mississippi been seeing bucks starting to chase? Ill be in poplarville this weekend so just curious. I talked to one guy who hunts up the road from us, and he said he had a buck run off a doe yesterday evening.

It's getting close, but I haven't got wind of chasing yet. I've seen trailing and heard from some guys that chasing was starting in St. Francisville. It's highly variable from location to location, so nailing down an exact time is difficult. I'm planning on having my rear end in the woods from Christmas through the first week and a half of January. Of course the weather sucks now.

LINK

This breeding date map is pretty accurate for my place in Perry County. Nothing there yet and it usually starts in Mid January. Poplarville is earlier, but probably not til after the holidays.

Woodville/Centreville: activity has been pretty much non existent the last week. I've hunted every afternoon and morning and been skunked most hunts, in food plots and stands where I normally see 10 deer every hunt. Not sure what the problem is. Have seen a couple small bucks chasing, but no where near the activity we normally see on our place this time of the year. Any other reports from this area??

I'm the one who Spider John is talking about. I got to the stand late last night and walked up on a yearling eating. It's a very small food plot and has a new cut next to it from logging we had done. Right at dark I had a doe come in the food plot. About 10-15 minutes later something came running through the woods and started grunting at her. It was way too dark to tell how big he was, but it was definitely a buck grunting. I did have some Tinks out so I don't know if he smelled that or the doe

I live north of Liberty. I hunted yesterday evening and saw 11 does/yearlings between 5-530. The biggest doe was very skittish but never saw a buck . We have our Christmas party tonight so I will be back there tomorrow afternoon.

Fayette Miss....seeing small bucks aggravate the does and run them off....big boys have swollen necks but do not appear to be chasing yet....I'm thinking after Christmas and maybe first week of January before they get crunk good...was seeing tons of deer till this last Sunday....deer movement is almost non existent right now...watched a young spike run 6 doe off Sunday, they wanted nothing to do with him....45 min after dark, big boy shows on camera by himself....little swollen neck, no dark hocks and still pretty fat and not worn down

I just got in from 5 days of hunting in Woodville. The first 3 days was hotter than balls and the deer were not moving at all. We had 10 hunters and the first 5 hunts resulted in 3 total deer seen. Wednesday morning I had 6 does run in on me and a few seconds later 2 bucks in hot pursuit. I shot what I thought was the bigger deer, I had very little time to decide and could not see them very well through the cover. I got excited due to seeing no movement at all for the first 5 hunts or I normally would not have shot that deer. Turned out to be a small rack 10 point. The 8 running with him was a nicer deer as he ran by me after I shot. My BIL had his dad with us who also shot a small 8 point that morning. We left after hunting Friday morning, I watched a doe trying to run off her yearling and another doe and yearling for a while nothing killed that morning but lots of deer seen around the property that morning. My BIL watched an 8 and a 6 chase does for a while and my friend watched a 7 run a doe up and down a holler for a while. They are real close to being full blown rut there. I wish I could back next weekend. Good luck and hope this helps someone

I hunted this area earlier this week and barely saw birds. The regulars at the lease said it's been like this all season. Likely culprit is the fair weather leaving more available grazing in the woods. Whitetails tend to be lazy in warm weather and no killing freeze has forced them into food plots. I also heard there was a bumper acorn crop this year.

I'm sure there are other factors.
