Anyone ever hunted whitetails up there? We are considering putting in for a whitetail only tag for the Nov rifle season. Looks like decent odds, and I've heard they have some good bucks.

Huge deer, hunt pheasants. South and North Dakota are gems.

Not there, but just to the west in the black hills of Wyoming. Stay in spearfish. Don’t drink and drive because they will pull you over for +/- 1mph. Also get a turkey tag while you’re there.

I’ve been researching but never been. It seems to be similar to Montana that Whitetails are not as pressured due to other big game and large landowners. This results in a good age class and a target rich environment.
We got weird looks in Montana for driving out of state to hunt Whitetails. All the locals figured we’d be after elk or mule deer.

You’d be driving a long way to a state that produces less booners than Arkansas and Mississippi. Now your Booner to hunter ratio would be much better. Also driving past Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska. That being said, SD is a quality state and you could have a great hunt on the right property.

Are you thinking about a do it yourself or going with a guide/outfitter? I’ve only pheasant hunted there, with a friend that lives in Nebraska, and it was a blast. Looking to make an out of state hunt this Fall. No connections in the Dakotas, have some in Montana, but they don’t share very nicely.

I've had this same thought about Nebraska/Wyoming/Montana etc. No way if I'm hunting whitetails that I'm driving THROUGH Kansas.
If I want the whole experience of scenery and camping then yea, but to straight up kill some bone, Kansas is the endpoint.

We are planning a diy trip. More going for experience. I love hunting out west and am tired of hunting Louisiana honestly.

Might be worthwhile to go on a turkey hunt out there this spring.

I turkey hunt that Black Hills of SD regularly. I went every year for about 15 years but haven't been back in a while. Hoping to go back this year and so SD, Wyoming, and Montana.
I have never deer hunted up there. But in May, it's like a petting zoo. The first green grass is popping out and there are literally hundreds of whitetails on the sides of the roads grazing the south facing slopes.
I can't say anything about buck quality because none of them have horns. But it's plenty of deer in general.
