Any of you guys hunt during the Conservation Order between the two splits? Apparently there's no bag limit and no limit on the amount of shells your gun can hold. Is it absolute anarchy out there or what?

To be successful, be ready to put in a lot of work. A lot better after the season is over to do conservation hunt.

Hell yeah.

Snows, blues and ross only. No specks.

It's a fun hunt. It can get crazy if you are on the X and have the right weather, but for the most part even in a heavy concentration of birds I'd think most hunts average 10-20 geese. I have seen piles of 100+ before, but that's an exception more than the standard.

We skin them and use them for gumbo. To me they're fine like that. I'd never pluck one though.

I talked to some guys that saved a bunch up and had summer sausage made. The processor required 20 pounds of goose meat minimum, so that took a while. They said that turned out really good once it was done.

Will be hunting out of Gueydan. I've been hearing that there have been a lot of geese flying through.

When we were young we would do a ton of sneaks on them. Best day I was a part of was 8 guys killing 478. I never ever want to do that again. Chasing cripples and carrying them back to the truck is enough to make my body ache just remembering. My thumbs were raw for what felt like weeks. Now I just depend on former students who will go kill a ton and I can just have them drop off 50-100. I just breast them and make jerky. Only way I want to eat them.

Definitely the best way for numbers but there’s not much like hundreds of snow geese landing all around you in a white spread.

Gueydan is a great area. The trick is getting in a field they’ve been using.

Just seeing a bunch hunting “traffic” is exponentially harder to get looks compared to being in a field they’ve been feeding in recently.

I've done it and would do it again. Goose sausage is legit.

After a big conservation hunt, we breast those skyrats and make sausage. My cousins will hack up the legs for crab bait for later in the year.

For snow geese, what load do you typically shoot? I have some 3.5 BB 12 gauge, but it would be nice to be able to fit another shell or two in my gun.

For pass shooting, bigger is better. For decoying birds 3” #2s is what I shoot.

That's a good question.

Regular season when we can shoot specks and you have to have a plug I like to shoot 3.5" 1 9/16ths oz. load BB's that Rio makes.

For conservation I have a mag extension tube that holds 7 total 3.5's or 8 total 3". Thus, in conservation season I shoot 3" 1 3/8th oz. load T's. And run her dry every time...

Without a mag extension, I don't think there is a difference in the amount of 3.5 vs. 3" shells you can run in most guns.

I heard a rumor that #4 buckshot (reloads) out of a 10 gauge will wad a snow up at 80 yards. Just a rumor

The right field, with the right ditch, and getting in position without one of those a-hole geese seeing you, and the numbers can skyrocket.

A great thirty seconds followed by a pain in the arse half hour rounding up cripples.
