Looking for a tractor in the 30-40 hp range. Our house in Alabama is on 27 acres of which 15 need to be mowed. The tractor will also be used on the hunting properties doing food plots and general utility stuff.

I’ve looked at John Deere, Kubota and New Holland (each have dealerships in nearby Dothan so servicing would be convenient). Are JD and Kubota worth the step up in price compared to the NH Workmaster or Boomer classes in the same horsepower range?

Also, the one in charge of the budget wants an ACed cab since she wants to do some of the mowing, also. She wants to know if one line’s air conditioning is noticeably better than the others.

As it stands right now, if the prices are fairly close between Kubota and JD, I’m leaning orange.

I don’t have either but I have I been looking for one for the exact reason you are. Buddy of mine has a JD his dad has a Kubota and his brother-n-law has the mahindra all in the same compact/utility range and he swears by the mahindra. He regrets getting the JD after getting on the mahindra.

Don’t have a cab but my kubota L4701 4x4 hst has been great and has tackled everything I have asked of it. Haven’t had a need to go into the dealer in the three years I have owned the machine. Only problem has been my addiction to implements it gets expensive

I feel like the John Deere sales and service centers are basically a criminal racketeering enterprise. The markup they have on parts and service is egregious.

As an example: one time I called JD to fix one of our tractors in the field. Instead of sending one of their mobile units, they sent our local shade tree mechanic (who's number I have in my phone). That guy did the work and billed JD $800. JD turned around and billed me $2400 for it.

Another time I sent my tractor in for its annual. They called me back with an estimate of $1800. I authorized the work. When I went to pick it up the bill was $7200. I flipped out. And told them I wouldn't pay it. They said they wouldn't release the tractor to me and that they would sell it at auction and collect their money. Their only explanation was: "we found more problems once we got in there."

I will never ever ever own another green tractor. I will buy something made by a joint venture between Venezuela, Russia, China, and the Syrian mob before I buy anything else from those arrogant arse raping frick faces. Final answer.

Ooookay, I'm sensing that JD is not a board favorite.

For the one mentioning Mahindra, there is no longer a dealership here locally.

In that HP range most tractors are Asian built and there are several good choices. You can get a Mahindra (Mitsubishi), Massey Ferguson (Shibaura), Yanmar in Yanmar or JD green, CaseIH and New Holland are the same and now LS tractors I think.

tractordata.com is a good resource for seeing exactly what you are buying.

Just do NOT buy one without long term local dealer support.

Agreed, I have a Kubota L3301 and it's a fine machine. Getting a tractor in the HP range the OP identifies with a fully enclosed cab/AC is going to look at a bit ridiculous though.

Not going to argue that

But, if the Secretary of the Treasury wants an AC cab while she mows the property, there's worse things in the world*.

* If you have blood pressure or heart issues, DO NOT watch her mow the yard. She does not mow in even patterns or lines. She takes a more, shall we say, "free form" approach to mowing. If Jackson Pollack or Dali mowed your lawn, they would have a more systematic approach. Drives me nuts to watch.

Are you going with a finishing mower or bush hog?

Not sure where in Alabama you are located, but seriously check out LS Tractors before you buy JD, Kubota, or New Holland. They are solid tractors and lower in price. They do have cab versions with AC.

They usually have some great package deals on them.

Finishing mower

I’ll get a bush hog eventually to do stuff on the hunting properties.

my missus offered to help with the mowing once. I was almost grateful until I watched her mow right over the limestone driveway with the mower deck down.

Thanks honey.
