Started as a bait shop. Spinner baits hanging on nails driven into the wall type of place. But Strop City was the perfect storm for growth of a huntin and fishin baw store. Being literally beside one paper mill and within a 50 mile radius of two more provide the market for baws with a paycheck burning a hole in their pocket. And having millions of acres of pine thicket above you, and bottomland delta to the east of you made it perfect geographically. What’s surprising is that now 2 of the mills have shuttered and Simmons keeps on rocking along.

Agree but was in there a couple of times in the last week or two and it was hand over fist.

They have a larger selection and better prices than Bass Pro. Also they have a full time gun Smith so the screws for the Glock not a problem

Is Slayden's still open? I remember stopping there for a sliced pork sandwich and slice of pie when I was a young baw.

Sorta, it was sold to the owners of Danken Trail a few years ago. The smoked pork is still the same but you have to specify "old or new style" beans or coleslaw.

Pies are still good but not as good as 5 years ago.

Slaydens has actually improved under new ownership imo. And the baked bean upgrade to more of a Danken Trail bean was an excellent maneuver. Their old beans are terrible. The poboys and brown gravy, burgers and sandwiches are all fine. The Q itself is nothing spectacular, but it’s all right. As mentioned Mack’s the brotha on the corner has better Q. His beans and tater salad ain’t hitting on shite though.

Yep, I am driving to Monroe or Sterlington on the reg for grub if I live in Strop City but there is actually a Johnny's there so it is not a total dining failure.

There was the Dairy Freeze in Mer Rouge. Turpins Eat a Bite maybe? There actually is an ok Italian place on the square across from the courthouse.

Not sure. There was a Johnny’s Dairy King back in the day. Maybe that’s it. Or the Country Cream in Mer Rouge

Simmons is staple in Bastrop, but unless Im remembering incorrectly, really the expansion of Simmons to what it is today took place not long after them making beau coup $$$ with his part in the mojo decoy ducks. Able to capitalize into what it is today.

Bastrop these days is a shell of its former self.

On point to other food related items, cream machine was also a fairly well known burger and malt/ice cream place. That one was on 165 near log cabin heading out to Hamburg. Country cream in Mer rouge was also a well know burger and ice cream place.
