So I'm seeing this start to make the rounds on social media LINK

They are claiming it's called a "sound moderator". Not a silencer because a muzzleloader is not considered a firearm by the ATF. A silencer is attached to a firearm by their definition.

In addition, this product can be purchased right now on the web with no regulation (no 4473, no $200 tax stamp, no photographs, and no fingerprints) and be shipped immediately to the customer with few exceptions.

My initial thoughts...

1. It's $999 and built off a Traditions Vortek which I'm seeing online for $450-$550. They are basically doubling the price

2. Would this open doors for someone to build their own "moderator" to attach to a muzzleloader?

I guess someone could make their own but I imagine, given how dirty black powder is and the nature of muzzle loading, the engineering is considerably different inside that can.

I think the key here is that it is "manufactured" in that configuration. In order for you to build you own you would have to build a silencer and then attach it (weld it) to the muzzle loader. Legally, you still would have manufactured a silencer withoit a form 1 or 07FFL/02SOT. It's like the black aces and shockwave "shotguns", only OK because they were manufactured that way and therefore skirt the definitions.
