18 yr old son is moving in with a couple of friends for college. He’s waiting tables and has some disposable income.

He’s looking to buy a pump shotgun. He’s wanting one mainly for home defense. He has an auto loading 12 ga and a 20 ga that he hunts with.

I’ve taken a quick look at the Mossberg 500/590 line so far.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

The Mossburg is perfect but can I make. Recommendation. This thing has gone up to 545 but maybe you can throw in a couple hundred for him. This keltec 22 mag auto with 25 round standard clip is a bad mfer. And it’s a great kill shot and snake gun.

One of baddest pistols period

I don't have a complete review of all pump shotguns, but I've owned and hunted with a Browning BPS pump 12 gauge for over 25 years, and it has been great and never let me down. Bear in mind, I perform a full cleaning and oiling after every use.

I paid around $500 for it new back then.

You can probably get something at pawn shop too. I bought that gun to cut down for self defense but it was too good a turkey gun

Man I am very pro-gun, but I was once 20 and had disposable income and lived with some buds. It was not a time for me to have guns in the apartment/house and I don't recommend it. Those situations have lots of drinking and shenanigans, and I wouldn't be worried about your boy, but some dumba** party guest you can't trust is another situation entirely. This scenario has too many uncontrolled variables for firearms to me.

If I didn’t have a shotgun with me in college, I would have never shared the duck blind, or the woods in general, with many lifelong friends. That’s where the real friendships began to blossom for me.

You would think I had one laying around based on the number of 870s sold.

I have an old Winchester pump turkey special. It was the first gun I bought for myself.

That exact thought has gone through my mind as well. His 2 friends are’ good kids’ as well but we all know how college house parties can turn to shite in an instant.

I can’t really stop him so I’m trying to advise him. My wife is adamant about a gun safe being a mandatory part of the purchase.
