I have two I have heard from some old timers.

1. Guy would take boots off and walk barefoot because he felt he made less noise that way.

2. Guy would put a turkey call in his mouth and chirp while walking through the woods. His reasoning was turkeys are loud and deer are use to them.

Any of y’all heard the same, try them out, and / or think there is any merit to those?

What tricks / tips you got?

Wear good neoprene or rubber boots, and walk on the balls of your feet only....

place each step... no matter what kind of shoes you wear...

wear natural fiber clothing.... take your time...

walk into the wind whenever and where ever possible...

it's a game for you.. it's life and death for the animals...

if you are in SERE school... it's not a game....

Da fuq?

I step with my heel down first and slowly roll the front of my foot forward when I walk. That's the quietest way for me.

When I was a youngster my friends and I would get big rakes and rake trails out through the leaves in the woods.

Come opening day of squirrel season we were on point

It's tough to do on a dead calm clear day. With some rain or wind it is much easier. Walk when the wind gusts, slow steady and quiet.

If you think you’re going slow enough, go half of that. I like the turkey call idea.

Walk into the wind. Use the wind in your favor. Use your eyes and binoculars to your advantage. You want to walk like a deer or animal, take 2 maybe 3 steps and then stop and glass. Animals rarely just straight walk continuously. You want to hunt places you can see, if you can’t see further than about 75 yards good luck.

If you walk up to a possible bedding area, keep their escape route in mind. So walk up to push them into the open and not into the thicker area in other words.

Isn't that an old Kenny Morgan quote? I feel like I remember reading that in One Man Game.

Go slow slow. Give yourself plenty time. Don’t use a flashlight. Take 5-10 min pauses to listen. Pay attention to birds and squirrels. Use the terrain to your advantage.

I would add look for horizontal objects, like the outline of deer's back. Not many limbs go horizontal in the woods Also look for pieces of deer not a whole deer (ear or a leg).

I know someone who used to hunt with a young Phil Robertson.

Phil used to squirrel hunt barefoot. He would also bury his first limit of squirrels and keep hunting

I can get within 50 yards of deer easily turkey hunting. I can always have turkey's walk under my tree stand deer hunting. So I would recommend doing something other than deer hunting and carry a gun, then you'll probably walk right up to them.

Rainy day or just after the rain. Windy works, too. Get in a small creek or drain and ease along.

Walk through creeks and I also never go in the morning until civil twilight. I let all of the crows and redbirds drown out my noise. I also rake the trail to my stand.
