Scuba: Best BCD and Dive Computer?
Posted by Fishwater on 5/6/21 at 9:49 pm00
Getting in to Scuba diving this summer and need two more items of gear: 1- BCD & 2- dive computer.
What do you recommend?
As for BCD I've been looking at a Scuba pro.
As for Dive Computer a friend recommended a Garmin.
Thoughts? Advice? Thanks!

If you're not certified yet and are just taking your open water class, don't bother buying either of those things yet. Get a well fitting mask, decent fins, and a cheap snorkel.
But the answer is a backplate & wing, and Shearwater :)

I have a scuba pro X-Tek. I really like it. I have the stainless plate with the padded harness. It's super comfortable, but bulky. It was perfect when I lived and dove in the same area. Now that I'm home, it's a little big to travel with. I am considering changing it to a travel configuration with a smaller plate and webbing. Or even just getting a new travel ready rig.
If I were to get a new BCD, there are a lot of other backplate/wing manufacturers out there that are a LOT cheaper than scubapro. I would probably go with someone else due to cost.
I have a Shearwater Teric computer. It's very nice. But you can certainly get by with a $200 computer, no problem. The wife uses a puck and it does everything she needs it to.
Personally, I love having AI. That's going to start at about $600 if I remember right. To me, it's worth it. Our group probably has about a dozen Teric computers, never had an issue. My SPG started leaking and I just ditched it. I only have my computer now.
Between that and my Air2, I minimized hoses coming off my 1st stage and I really like it a lot. Others, many others, hate Air2 type regs. It works well for me though.

Are you in Old Mandeville by chance? I saw a guy walking his chocolate lab in my hood the other day with a hell divers shirt.

If this was yesterday, we live close to each other b/c we didn't walk too far
Scuba pro equipment treated me well back when I got into diving in 1997. Had an oceanic data trans with air integration for a computer. I am sure the tech today is far better no matter the brand. Only purchase I regret was my tank. Other than that it’s nice to have your own gear.

I have a Cressi dive computer. I keep thinking about getting a BCD but I just end up renting the BC and regulator. One day I will decide to buy one.

I am hoping one of my kids shows interest in scuba as I would really like to get back into it

My own gear is so much more comfortable than using rental stuff. Also, I know where it's been. I was on a long weekend in BVI, using rental gear, and one of the DM's that was using the shops gear found a snake in his reg. It was only 4"-5" long, and he found it before the dive, but still. I can only imaging how it would go over, finding a snake in the reg at depth...
