Any tips for getting rid of significant scratches in fiberglass? I’ve got a bay boat that I treated like crap when I was in college and am attempting to make it look nice again, but struggling to say the least, the oxidation on red boats is pretty wild

Wet sand then get a good west marine rubbing compound with a buffer. After that buff on a coat of wax. The boat will look new. Just be careful going over any stickers/plastic with the buffer!

3m makes a compound/wax cleaner that works real good. Just work in small spots at a time in shade.

Go to Harbor Freight and buy their buffer/sander and some 6" wool pads. They work great for this.

Wet sand and then polish for the oxidization.

Are the scratches deep and into the fibergalss or just swirls in the clear? swirls in the top layers will be fixed when wet sanding. Deeper scratches that removed material, you can get gel coat repair kits and match the color. Use those to fill in the area before wet sand.

as others mentioned first wet sand the scratch with 1000-2000 grit paper and use dawn with water. after wash the boat and buff with 3m compound. The first time i took my skeeter out i scratched it within 2 minutes of it being in the water. It looked pretty damn good when i was done.

What fish said, but be careful on the buffer with the compound Bc if you sit in a spot too long it can mess it up

OP, by the time you buy all the stuff in this thread you could drop it off at a detailer for just a little more. It will look way better and you won't burn a whole weekend.

This is what I would do. I was going to install a floorin my boat myself, until I got the quote from Acadiana Prop. It was only about $150 more than if I would have bought all the supplies, and I didn't have to lift a finger and it was done correctly.
