This is from a friend's son on Facebook. He was hunting in Yazoo County, Ms. and suffered a broken pelvis among other injuries. He has young children.

Something happened to me Saturday morning that I thought couldn’t happen.. I’ve hung deer stands hanging from tree limbs, trees and ladders my whole life with no issues.. I use to do it without a safety harness cause “ I didn’t need it”but as many of you probably have said “ oh it’s good it’s grown into the tree”. I’ve made it a habit the last few years of my life to wear a safety harness but this specific time I didn’t turn around to run back inside to grab my harness, because I was running late.. Well as soon as I stepped on to yhe platform. The chain broke and In blink of an eye, I was falling 24ft laying on the ground in the worst pain ever. It is very important buddies you hunt with know your exact location. Safety harness’s and lifelines are a MUST!!!! I’m very lucky to only have the minimal injuries I have..

We have all done it without falling, but I NEVER go without being tied off anymore. In fact this year I've been rappelling down.

I seriously don't understand why so many people refuse to use a harness. I slip in mine at the truck and all I have to do is wrap my HSS rope around the tree and hook to it. Simplest thing ever and I don't have to worry about falling 20 feet.
