Do you hunt differently when the rut hits?

I like to see a long way. My current camp has a lot of CRP, so I’ll be set up to watch a couple of long lanes. I always carry a grunt call and hunt later into the morning than usual.
My former camp had an old pasture down in a large creek bottom with a small ditch running across it. It was good anytime, but was awesome during the rut. You could catch a mature buck crossing it most anytime of the day when the rut hit.

I love to sit scrapes.

Find the good sign, freshen the scrape yourself, wait till he comes to investigate

ETA: if they’re full on chasing then it’s not the best but the weeks and days up to and after that, it’s money.

I also like to see a long way. I will hunt till noon during the rut and usually sit a powerline or pipeline. That’s what I plan on doing tomorrow. I’ll hunt next Wednesday and Thursday when most people are back at work. Those will be all day sits.

I hunt all day in stands. That’s the only thing I change.

1. Find fresh scrapes.
2. Hunt near fresh scrapes as long as possible.

That's it.

Try to get close or in known bedding areas.

Do you not already do this outside of rut?

I call much more. About every 15 or 20 minutes I will do some tending gunts followed by estrous bleats with a can call. That's one tactic that has worked well over the years.

I will also move if I'm hunting an area where I can see a considerable distance. If I see a buck chasing/tending a doe several times, I'll climb down and relocate. That being said, I'm normally bow hunting.

Dawn and dusk were still better where I'm at. natural bottleneck in pin oak, cedar, and pecan woods.

Rut strategy.. be in the woods when its happening. Be in an area you can see a long ways.

I usually sit pinch points that are difficult to get in due to finicky winds all year. I stay out of them until the rut and they start to get stupid. Still hunting is my go to starting Jan 1.

Honestly I’m the opposite and I don’t know the right answer. But I much prefer to be in the woods almost always. Open areas I feel are best to actually catch a buck on the chase of a hot doe. But if there’s no hot doe or just a cruising buck, I still feel like trails between bedding areas and places with good buck sign are my favorite areas. Now definitely no reason when gun hunting to limit your range and I try to stay where I can see as far as possible. But some guys sit just regular green fields and that’s not really my thing.

Yeah pretty much unless I’d find a hot tree outside the rut.

CRP only boring when you’re not seeing deer.

Mornings I sit fields

Afternoons is when I go to those spots I’ve been saving. The spot in the woods between bedding areas and food. No matter how shitty of a season I’ve had, the spots are off limits until I know the bucks have gotten careless
