Rules of killing Nutria on Wildlife Refuge

Went fishing last weekend in the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge and must've seen 30-40 nutria out there.
Are there rules about killing those things out there? I don't even care about the bounty, just want them gone.

Their website says you can only hunt during youth waterfowl season and that's a federal refuge, so I'd definitely call them up and ask to make sure you don't end up on the wrong side of a federal wildlife charge.

You would need to call and speak to an agent. Duck hunting with steel shot is the only hunting activity the regs appear to support. That must be done with a youth. So, you could legally shoot them from daylight to 1 pm with a shotgun if you have a kid in the boat. My son shot one last time we were duck hunting out there earlier this year. The regs are silent on other hunting activities.

I'd call first but I'm thinking you can kill 5 a day.
ETA:
Missed the NWR part.

Nutria
Season: Sept. 1 – Feb. 29. See exception below for certain WMAs.
Prohibited Activities
Possession of detached nutria parts, including nutria tails, by recreational hunters.
Pelting of recreationally harvested nutria.
Sell of recreationally harvested nutria or any parts from recreationally harvested nutria.
Leaving of recreationally harvested nutria carcass in the field, EXCEPT that nutria may be gutted.
Daily Limit
Five per day.
Legal Gear
Any gear on private lands. Shotguns with non-toxic shot only and rimfire rifles .22 caliber and smaller on WMAs.
Exceptions
Nutria may be taken on Atchafalaya Delta, Salvador/Timken, Pointe-Aux-Chenes, and Pass-a-Loutre WMAs Sept. 1 – March 31.
On WMAs during waterfowl seasons, nutria may be taken only by the use of shotguns with shot not larger than F steel.
The Coastwide Nutria Control Program is a separate program and is in no way related to the nutria recreational season. For questions on the Coastwide Nutria Control Program call the Lafayette field office: 337-262-2080.

I thought shooting anything from a running moving boat was illegal. I watched a video on sportsman of some guys doing just that? Shooting nutria from a running moving boat. With shotguns after duck hunting. But I have also seen people shoot hogs from moving airboats so mabe not. Who knows the laws on this?

They certainly don't make it easy to figure out the laws on it.

Illegal for sure to kill migratory birds and deer from a moving boat that is powered by an outboard. Squirrels, rabbits, hogs, nutria are all legal from a moving boat from what I have seen of the law. I would check that with WLF though.

why is there a limit on hunting nutria? arent they invasive and horrible for marsh? i would think they would want you to kill every damn one you see.

I'm about ready to bring my .22 to the office here on Old Jefferson in Prairieville.
There's a whole nutria village living in the ditches around here. I wonder what the average motorist would think of me hunting in the ditches on the side of the road.

I sent an email to them about it, would make sense no hunting though. I can't exaggerate how many nutria we saw, I hit a couple with my kayak paddle they were so close.
That only makes sense to me if they feel no sense of danger from humans.

This and year round. The same goes for wild hogs.

Bumping this in case anyone else was interested. From the horse's mouth:
A shame, they are so overpopulated there.

Currently there is no nutria hunting on Bayou Sauvage, we control nutria by utilizing staff to assist in trapping. In the future Bayou Sauvage is considering allowing the take of nutria during the youth waterfowl hunts, stay tuned for announcements for the next hunting season. We will have informational bulletins sent out and there will be information on our webpage.

It’s a shame but they don’t allow hunting on NWR’s for invasive species so aholes don’t shoot the local fauna. You allow a shotgun and someone duck hunts. You allow a .22 and they shoot small game. Allow a .243 and someone injures white tails.

Inside city limits of NO also affects the USWS rules there. Despite prior to it becoming a refuge was pretty wide open.
It was a battle to get youth duck hunts approved there. If u think nutria are overpopulated there go on other side of hwy 11. Hogs galore

I've been kayak fishing south of the ICW a lot lately and haven't seen any hogs. Which side of why 11 are you talking about?

The side on the inside of chef hwy/hwy11 and I-10
