Hey guys, just bought a takedown and the factory sights are microscopic. would a scope or red dot sight be better for this application?

Depends what you want to do with it.

I agree with civiltiger, depending on your specific use recommendations will change.
If you’re looking for a solid budget option to plink it’s hard to beat the Bushnell TRS-25.
Frequently at $69.99 on Amazon.
TRS-25
TRS-25 High Rise
If you want something a little nicer Nikon rimfire scopes are excellent.

A takedown says you plan on packing it around I would assume?! Using it for potshots or shtf?!
I would want dependability of improved irons or peep sight. Check out skinner sights I think they have a rail for ruger 10-22 with a peep. Then a red dot on top that rail.

UTG Bug Buster is what I have and it fits in the bag.
The 3x9-32 version is what I run for exactly the same reason: it's REALLY compact. I'm not taking 400 yard shots with my takedown, so $100 on a scope that keeps everything nice and compact and reliably lets me get out to 50-100 yards is exactly what works for me.
Plus, for $100, it really does outperform. It ain't matching up against something like a Leupold, but the optics are surprisingly good for the price point. It also comes with some nice features you don't usually see in that price range for rimfire, like adjustable objective, included QD rings, and R/G illuminated reticle.
If I had to pick between the UTG and my Nikon Prostaff, I'm going with the Bugbuster every day.
