The good ones are easy to do. They are expensive and will cut heavily into your mpg. If you are overlanding or setting up a base camp, its really the way to go

Look into expedition vehicle forums. All of those guys love theirs from what I can tell.

My buddy has one and from what he says it is truly one of those you get what you pay for things. If you go cheap, you will know it.

I actually made one out of a Cabela's double cot tent.

Works well.

Tent was 200 used. Aluminium atv ramp was free.

Joined them. Mounted tarp under rack, wrapped and ratchet strap closed.

No, but I want one. There is a good pro vs con video on YouTube. Aside from the cost and hurting mpg, supposedly you have shim the truck on blocks to level.

D90 sold on BaT

What’s the advantage over a regular tent?

I used to have an ARB Simpson RTT on my Nissan Frontier...

Easy to setup, but a bigger PITA to pack up. Also had issues keeping the cover mildew and mold free.

If I had to do it again, I’d splurge more for the hardtop tents (James baroud, maggiolina)
More expensive, but super easy to set up and pack up.
