Roof Rack For Kayak on Truck

OB, I’m headed to Marathon in July and really want to bring my kayak to fish in. Will have luggage in the bed of the truck, so hauling it in the bed isn’t an option. Really don’t want to pull a trailer that far.
Has anyone hauled one on the roof of an F-150? Looking at Rhino Racks which make aftermarket ones specifically to fit the contour of the roof. How big of a deal is this, how bad would it be?

How much is the roof rack? You can rent a kayak for a couple hundred bucks for a week.

put luggage inside the kayak
I'll be in almost the exact same situation as you next week (packing for a week long vacation in my truck while brining kayak) and even with 3 females, I think I should be able to make it all fit

I envy that. We have our 5th wheel at the lake and between trips to get the boat, the jet skis and my kayak are a pain. Then in a few days I will be grabbing my 18' trailer to bring along the SxS and quad to go riding also.
I don't think my wife, my stepdaughter and her friends realize how much crap I have to do for their leisure.

Harbor Freight has some truck racks or a bed extender that may work

i've hauled SUP and kayak on my tahoe. Worried about damn straps breaking and the thing flying off the whole time..
Your issue is you are going to have to install cross bars on your truck since they don't have them. Not sure I'd want to go through expense of adding roof rails to a truck.

I've hauled a pirogue a few hundred miles before with my pickup and the bed full of other things. What I did was put a blanket on the top/back portion of the roof of my cab and placed the pirogue upside down on that and the top of the tailgate.
Then I tied it off with a rope from the bow to my front bumper and the back end to the back bumper. For extra safety sake I tied one end of a rope to the hold downs near the front of the bed and looped the rope one time around the pirogue and cinched the other end of the rope down to the other side of the beds hold down hooks.
Damn thing didn't move an inch in over 200 miles.

And I'm suppose to know Marathon is in Florida-----and almost 1000 miles away.
Pretty sure if you type in Marathon, you will get hits in states much closer since the OP didn't specify Florida in his post.

Sorry. I thought everyone would know Marathon meant Marathon Key.
And I know I can rent one. But it’s not my boat. I mean, you get it.
I have a bed cover that locks, and we’re renting a house. My bed is going to be full, and I don’t want to have to worry about securing items overnight. I’m likely going to buy a rack system anyways, but it’s still a somewhat big deal to haul this thing.

What someone needs to invent is one of these with low profile clamps that work with folding tonneau covers...

We adjust has the best idea. But if you are having tall items and want the length going over your cab, Try Etrailer. I entered a link and estimated you have a 2018 f150.
But since you may only do this once….$300+ is a bit steep and they is why the HF option is good and you can use it more.
There is one more thing for saving money….. Strapped bars. The straps wrap inside the truck. Another option. I’m cheap as hell if I only use it once per year.
I paid over a thousand dollars for a Thule roof kit and their largest carrier and I’ve used it for two trips in the last five years. Waste of money.
Just naming options.
By the way, This is an awesome question with good responders.

Does your truck have stake pockets on the edges of the bed? I made one on the cheap for a paddleboard for my truck using 2x4's, shelf brackets from big box store, paracord, cable ties, and pipe insulation.

I use a Yakima system for beach trips, seems very solid but the wind noise sucks. I don't know if I could take the noise on a 1000-mile road trip.

Another thing to consider is keeping your kayak secure during the stay. Are you staying in a place where you can stow it away, or at a hotel? This is an instance where renting solves so many issues.
