Man, too many options for me know what I'm looking at. I'm ready to upgrade from my Zebco 202 combo, but can't figure out what I should be looking for. We fish a lake mainly for white perch/crappie, but I want a rig that can handle a little bigger catfish if one gets on the line as well.

How come there aren't many baitcasters for sale these days? Seems like that's what everyone used years ago when I was a kid.

Bearings? Ratios?

Rod weights? Why do I keep seeing some really long rods even for light fishing?

Any cons to braided line?

I'm assuming most choices are personal preference, but I need some place to start. Any suggestions for full setups that would run between say $50 and $100 that would be appropriate for this kind of fishing would be greatly appreciated!! (Go ahead and talk to me like I'm a moron, just been too long since I've shopped for fishing gear)

Put this Shimano Syncopate 4000 on a 7'6" Shakespeare Ugly Stick with some 15lb test Power Pro, you'll be able to catch everything from Perch to 10lb catfish.

I crappie fish with a 10' fly rod and 8# fluorocarbon. Have caught big bass, catfish, and goo on this setup also. Just can't horse 'em.

I don't cast for them often, but if AlxTiger comes in here, he'll tell you how to do that.

This really depends on exactly how you're going to use it. Are you casting jigs? Dropping minnows straight down? Flipping docks? Etc. etc. Baitcasters generally aren't used much for crappie unless you're just vertical jigging, or spider rigging.

I've just recently made a transaction with Santa for a Norsemen Powerlite 6'6" rod and a Pflueger Summit XT spinning reel (size 30). This is going to be my new crappie rod. I'll be using it to cast jigs.

You can go to cabela's or basspro and probably find a good deal on a Pflueger President or maybe even a combo. Most of the combos come with rods too stiff for what I like to use for crappie though.

I would buy the bass pro graphite series rods when they are on sale and pflueger presidents or shimano saharas on sale. Seems like it would be solidly in your budget.

Look for a 6' or 6'6" spinning rod with a line weigh of either 2-8 or 4-10. Match it with a 1000 series spinning reel. I don't use much braid anymore because of Nanofil and Gliss, but there is nothing wrong with braid. The ones I mentioned just come off the reel so much smoother. Tie that to a swivel then use a leader of either mono or fluoro.

There is a zebco protocol you must follow. You cant go from a 202 straight to a baitcaster. You progress to a
333, then to a 404. All the way up to a 808. I have them all. Tried to move from the 404 to ambassador 4500c, reel police found me, revoked my fishing license.
