Decided to do some deer hunting. Need advice on a rifle. Got 3 food plots with the largest being about 175 yards from the stand. If you could have 1 rifle that you used for the occasional deer hunt, what would it be? Not looking to spend a ton of money, just a basic gun that would get the job done.

Tikka T3... 270, 308, 30-06, 280.

eta: first, in case this turns out like the other rifle advice threads.

I'd advise shooting those listed in the 2nd post and see which one you like best. They'll all drop a deer with ease from 175 yards

Tikka t3 in .308, .270, or .30-06 would be my choice.

You can change the rifle, but go with one of those 3 calibers. Nobody makes a bad rifle these days.

Anybody shoot a .270WSM? I have wanted to get one for a while but couldn't really justify it since I already have a .30-06 and 30-30

I have one. It's a Tikka. I don't shoot it a lot. I don't even have a scope on it right now. I never even got a chance to kill a deer with it, before I bought my 300. I'm in the process of turning it into a truck gun for coyotes/hogs. It was super accurate before I took the scope off of it.

None of the above posters are wrong considering you're talking about the furthest plot being only 175 yards away. Child's play for any of the calibers mentioned. Even the 30-30 with the leverevolutions can get out to 200 yds with ease. Which would be my gun of choice for the distance you're talking about. BTW, .444 and 35 wheelan would be a consideration at that distance and have a considerable advantage in knock down power. The rest of the calibers mentioned above would be advantageous at distances beyond what you're hunting. Of course, all of this is IMHO and others will disagree.

Go with a 270 or 30-06 because you never know when you need that little extra.

Get a 35 whelen handi rifle, you can hunt primative seasons. If I was getting a new rifle and didn't have one that's what I would start with. I know a few folks that use only that year round.

Have a Thompson Icon 7mm and love it. You can save a little money and get the venture in synthetic and it is same action

The wife just got me the CVA Elite Stalker .444 for Christmas. .270 when I'm hunting the 200 yd. line and the .444 when in the climber and shooting less than 150. The 30-30's gonna turn into a safe queen.

The 444 and 35 whelen bring whole new meaning to primative. Plus the handi rifles are cheap, nobody cares about taking them in the rain and mud.

Yesir, and as mentioed above, I have a buddy that hunts year round with a .444 and drops many-a-deer with it.
