Does anyone know of a place that rents boats? I'm interested in something like a 23' to 25' center console, that can handle near shore trips into the gulf (i.e. within 10 miles of land) off the LA or MS coast. I'm located in Baton Rouge, but any rental place in south LA or south MS could work.

Most of the people I know who rent fishing boats kinda insist on coming along. They have a name for that type of person and everything. If you're nice, they will even drive and let you fish their spots. Hell, most will clean your fish for you.

Taking a charter would probably be your best bet.

From a quick google search, the only things i see available are 15ft flat bottoms.

Yeah, that's just not at all what I'm looking for. Growing up and into my 20's, we had a 25' boat and a camp. Would take the boat out to the MS barrier islands for fishing and play. Katrina relieved me of the boat and camp, but now I'm looking to have that boating experience again with my family but I'm not quite ready to fully commit (yet) to buying another boat.

A guide or charter is just not what I want. Having someone else drive me around is a negative in my book, not a plus.

You will pay out the arse for something like this if you can even find someone willing to let a stranger take their boat into the open gulf.

They used to rent out bare bones Carolina Skiffs in Lafitte for about $50/day. I've never seen a place renting out nice bay boats or center consoles.

I wonder how much would you have to charge for a $40K boat to make a profit renting them?

That was sort of my point. Nobody is going to rent their offshore rig out to some greenhorn Yankee down from Horseheads for the week. From a liability standpoint, you might as well be renting them a loaded gun with a broken safety.

At that commitment level you may as well buy your own.

I've never seen one time rentals of well equipped boats like those. It would probably be a maintenance nightmare renting a fleet of nice boats to a bunch of yahoos.

Some waterfront locations in Fla and along the eastern seaboard have enough demand for this kind of thing that they have plenty of marinas that offer boat rentals. Many of them use Triumph boats because of their durability and are easy to maintain (because they're basically huge kayaks with motors!)

I just did a quick google search and saw a marina in Connecticut that offers a 17' and 19' Triumph center console to rent.

I can't imagine a down payment and a note being far off from this. I guess you get to walk away when you're tired of it, but damn.

Just sold mine a couple weeks ago. It was basically indestructible. I'm going to have to baby my Xcell compared to the old one.

Sold my 1999 17' dual console 2 years ago, only because my father in law bought a boat and told me I have free use of it whenever I wanted.

I loved it. Didn't have to worry about coming in too hot at the dock or banging it on the trailer.

My granddaddy always said "approach the dock at the speed you want to hit it." But he had a wooden Lafitte Skiff.

I live by this as well, but with boats and planes, they usually come with a Capt so you lose that personal freedom.
