I got a Remington 1100 from my dad probably 30 years ago. My guess is he had it for 10 years or so. Any idea if it can/can't shoot steel? I'm taking my daughter on a goose hunt next week in ND and I figured she'd be better with an automatic (friends up there have only pumps and I'll just borrow one of theirs). My buddy up there said to make sure it can shoot steel and said it depends on the choke. Obviously I'm not that knowledgeable so I thought I'd ask the OB. He said it would be on the barrel, but I only see Remington 1100 and 2 3/4 shells underneath. Although I haven't shot it in about 5 years, it's always stayed cleaned and oiled so the condition isn't an issue.

Thanks in advance!

Does it have a choke or is it a fixed barrel?

Fixed ( I assume). Just smooth steel all the way to the end with the silver bead on top.

I mean...It will probably jam, but should shoot the first steel shot shell fine.

I shoot steel out of my 2 1100s just fine. Great guns when clean

Yes that sounds like a fixed barrel. A choked barrel would have about a 3" cylinder screwed in.

Yes it can, but not the best thing for it. Read on the barrel to see if it can shoot 3" shells. A lot of 1100's were only 2 3/4" chamber. You don't want to be using 2 3/4" shells for goose hunting.

You can. Lead em a good bit to put steel on their head. I've killed plenty of geese with 2.75 bb

It only says 2 3/4 shells on the barrel so if that's not the preferred shell for geese, I guess I won't bring it.

Thanks again!

Did any 1100 come with chokes? I've only ever saw 28" modified and 30"full fixed barrels.

This is true

Crazy how my grandpa used to hunt with a 2 5/8 and now we're using cannons

Is the choke not written on the barrel somewhere? All 1100’s can handle steel provided the choke is modified or less. I’m definitely not as experienced with waterfowl as others on here, but I wouldn’t let 2 3/4 only shells stop me from bringing the gun.

I've had mine since I was a kid and shot plenty of geese with steel 2 3/4.

Have a great time.

Other than the serial #, I see nothing written on the barrel other than Remington 1100 2 2/3 shells. As long as a second misfire is the only thing that can happen. I guess I'll give it a try. Nothing potentially dangerous with shooting it though right?

If the barrel is full choked large steel pellets (like you’ll probably be using for geese) will probably damage it. I don’t know how many shells. A box? A dozen boxes? I really don’t know the answer. But you don’t shoot steel through those old fixed full choke guns.

I'm not an expert but I agree, think it's a roll of the dice. My buddy had one and his barrel blew up.

Might want to look into that classic double load.

Hold a dime sideways and see if it will slide into the end of the barrel. It will slide into the end of a modified barrel, but it won’t fit in a full choke.
