Reloading shot shells

Does anyone on the OB reload their shotgun shells, particularly steel shot? I’m thinking of getting started but don’t know all the things I’ll need or make it easier. Please post up the necessities and any info that will help me get started. Thanks.

Supplies have been in short supply for a long time, this might currently be an easy path to get shells

Reloading manual
Hulls
Wads
Shot
Powder
Primers
Filler wads(depends on load and recipe)
Reloading press
Scale
You have to follow the recipe exactly (with very few exceptions) when reloading shotgun shells especially steel shot. Alliant steel powder will be the best powder to get. I recommend the rsi wad and recipe book for steel shot reloading.

This! We used to reload shells back in the mid-80's before the ban on lead for waterfowl. Back then you could really load some hot shells with lead, and for cheap. Once the switch to steel was made, you were pretty much regulated to the same shells as on the shelf and there was little savings. Definitely not enough to compensate for the time spent.

Cost savings is not what reloading steel shot is about. I did extensive shot patterning with many different loads. The advantage is you can find a load that shoots well in your gun and stick with it. You don’t have to worry about what’s available at the local Walmart or academy. There are steel shot recipes out there that that work well in many different guns but unfortunately every single gun/choke combination is different. You will have to do the patterning to see what your gun likes. It will be eye opening when you look at the patterns and see giant holes in the pattern that a duck can be untouched in. Makes you rethink all those misses in the past.

I reload shells for clay shooting and go thru 20 flats a year and its not really cost effective but I can make high quality AA shells for the price of promo loads.
reloading steel - I dont see the logic unless you really want to fine tune loads - there are so many good steel loads now there really isnt a need. Find a shell that pattern wells in your gun and stick to it. For me I stick w/ a 3" 1 1/8 oz load at 1500 or 1550 fps (Kent fast steel or hevimetal) - both pattern really well w/ a mod or light full in berettas

I like to shoot steel in my 16 gauge. In the past, I was able to find it for a little more than 12 gauge. The price is now $25 a box. If I can do it for less, I can see it.

Got a shotshell press I'll donate, don't use it. It may be an old Pacific Machine. I'll have to look. Let me know.

My son and I shot at Sherburne several weeks ago. A fellow drove up in a truck as we were leaving and pulled our hulls from the trash.

An old pacific press that you’ll give away? Where are you!?!?

Man, reloading steel, I just don't see the point.
