Gonna take advantage of some of the public land this country has to offer and do some backpack hunting. Beginning to build my arsenal starting with a good tent.

Any recs appreciated.

Currently considering a few alps mountaineering and Kelty models

Hilleberg and don't look back.

Whatever you do, try to order from a place like moosejaw.com (shouldn't be hard they have a huge sale right now) and get 12% cash back from activejunky.com. You can basically turn a $600 tent into a $400 tent if you shop the deals.

I made $75 back from some sitka gear i ordered before my kansas hunt this year. It helps a lot.

Depends what season you go. October it gets cold you need a hot tent with a stove this will be a life saver in the back country. Luxe Hiking Gear makes some great tents. Trust me when your over 10,000 ft in altitude everything freezes and it’s misrable, getting up in the mornings to hunt and boots and clothing are frozen!

I’ve got a hubba hubba and I’ve been pleased with it. I mainly hunt bow season where temps only get down to mid to low 30s. I’ve since moved on to sleeping in a hammock and sleep much, much better than I ever did in a tent.

If you don’t have to deal with snow loading, a single wall tent may be an option. They’re super light but work best in low humidity, “crisp” weather environment.

Zpacks duplex is really popular long distance hike tent

I have been a scoutmaster for years and the tent the troop uses is a 2 man Eureka Timberline for the boys $189.95. They also have a great 4 man that is more in line to what I feel 2 adults would use $239.95. It gives you a little extra room. Campmor also sells replacement parts like poles, rain fly's, tent rings and pins, footprints and storage bags. Every couple of years we would seal the seams and spray them with spray silicone and they would be good as new. A vestibule $69.95 is an add on that can be purchased to give a few more covered sqft. When parts would fail we could combine tents and would always have extras in the troop trailer. These are not 4 season tents but you can zip them up tight or open them up and let them breath. If you are not above the tree line you should be fine.

I prefer a hammock over a tent any day and with practice you will do just fine in cold weather. I have a warbonnet hammock and it's one of the best purchases I have ever made. However, now that I am up here in Alaska I went back to a tent just because I am above the tree line so often. I also think bears are a bit more curious about a hammock than a tent. The Hubba Hubba is a very good tent and many people on the Appalachian Trail had them when I hiked it several years back. The copper spur 2 is another proven tent. I ended up going with the expedition copper spur actually. A little heavier, but a little more stable in heavy wind and snow.
