Recs for Gifting a “special” handgun - 50th bday [update pg 3 - decision made]
Thinking about gifting a nice handgun to a family member that doesn’t have any handguns but is starting to get interested in them with all this craziness. Price range is up to $1,200 or so, because this relative has had a big impact on my business. Want to gift something nice.

I could wait for a gun show and hope to find some cool old revolver or browning hi power, but something new and easily obtainable might be best. Appreciate any suggestions or wish list items that are still in the “staple” category, not something completely random.

How old is this person? The reason I ask is because a certain birth year pistol might be nice.

Colt Python would be my buy. Might be a little more but should be able to find one.

I think the new production have had some issues.

If you’re wanting to get a nice handgun why not a older Smith K22 or K38?

Ok, in my defense I have been drinking a little heavy tonight and somehow missed the 50th birthday part when I made my reply.

Here is a nice 1970 Colt 1911

Sig p210 is fricking amazing. Get one. It's not tactical or anything, it's just really really nice. Amazing trigger, amazing fit, amazing accuracy. Seriously, get it.

Was thinking more in the 9mm to .45 range. But I’ll look into the smiths. Sig 1911 also top of mind as I posted this. Just haven’t bought Or shot anything new in years so not really sure what of the popular new items now are still worth the money. Kimber seemed to be the standard 10+ years ago but not so much now.

I second the Sig p210. I think it’s right around your price range, it’s a new obtainable gun, and they’re a nice and fairly unique gun compared to “another 1911” or similar popular pistols.

For a 9mm pistol, Kimber guns always look classy but I’ve never shot one.

But someone who has never had a gun probably would be thrilled with a $500 gun.

What do you think your relative will do with the gun? Carry or keep in the house? I’d personally love to have a Colt .357 revolver like this:

For $1200?

Multiply that by 3 and you’re getting close.

This stood out to me. A 1911 or P210 is hardly an ideal first handgun. Maybe go the other way and buy them a Glock 19 along with a suite of accessories and ammo. Set him up for success with his first handgun. Hell, if you really want to treat him buy him a certificate to a training course and go with him to the class.

Ive seen a couple lately around $1600. Obviously, they arent perfect or have the correct grips, but their value will still be up.

Those Dan Wesson guns look nice. Look like Kimbers to me. I’d love the revolver.

I think you need to answer a few questions for yourself first.
How is the person going to use the gun? Carry, home defense or pretty gun to put in the safe.
How gun savvy is this person? You said they did not have any handguns, but might have others or experience.
Is this person slight or perhaps recoil sensitive? If they are, you might want to stick to 9mm or 38sp.
How much will the gun be shot?
Perhaps the biggest question, do they “want” a hand gun? If the person is 50 and doesn’t own one, they might not desire to have one.
Any Sig will be a good choice. Don’t buy a kimber unless it is old stock. The quality of kimber has really been bad for the past 5 to 10 years.

Thanks for all the feedback. Good suggestions. I'm thinking they would get more range use from a handgun (living in DFW), but a nice over under might also be a good route considering we may start trying to go on more bird trips. But I'm still leaning handgun. I love Sig but don't have experience with the 210.

I'm seeing these on gun store sites but am not really familiar. Anyone own and have good experiences? These seem to be priced on the "quality" end of the spectrum.
