Say you had a friend that was going to relocate to a part of Alaska that’s only accessible by plane and wanted an ATV. This said friend is looking for an ATV that with preventative maintenance is very dependable and rarely needs mechanical repairs. What brand / model would you recommend to get him started on his search. Model that’s reliable and somewhat fuel efficient is even better. Thanks.

I should probably also point out that this friend currently still uses a 1986 Honda Three Wheeler. Still love it, but it’s approaching time for an upgrade.

Any newer Honda rancher/foreman. Honda keeps it basic and reliable. Stay with fuel injected due to low temps.

Looking at the Honda Rancher actually. Have the opportunity this weekend to visit a few dealerships around Anchorage. Just afraid I’m going to end up walking out with an ATV and a snowmobile lol.

I got my first Honda 90 in 1980 and owned nothing but Honda until my most recent purchase, I now own a Polaris and am glad I made the switch.

I made the decision after swapping bikes for a day with a buddy screwing around just riding, he wanted his back in an hour and I did not want to give it to him.

4 years old, zero maintenance issues, and will run circles around any Honda on any terrain on earth while providing a more comfortable ride.

My Honda rancher 420 is a great ATV. But one snow/sleet hunting day in AR this year makes me think a sidexside with a windshield would be better in AK.

For the snow get a pioneer or mule.

Yes, 550 HO it is a 2013 but I bought it new in 2014 at a discount.

The only drawback if you consider it one is it is a full size 4 wheel drive with a 4,000lb winch on front that will stand up on you if you jab the throttle while moving on level ground, and I aint no small fella.

Have 2 of these and the old '98 300 4trax puts them to shame...from a reliability perspective.

I have a Can Am and love it, but it's like comparing a BMW to a base model Chevy pickup. In Alaska get the Honda (Chevy pickup).

Any fuel injected Suzuki. I’ve owned 2 since 1994. Never had a single problem and only performed basic maintenance. Both garage kept...makes a big difference.

Wanted to update...Move held up a bit with the shutdown but everything was finalized this past week. Went with the Honda Rancher 420. My boss told me to go ahead and get all my toys so the move would pay for transportation to the rural area. Can’t transport boats over 14 feet (which is to small for the lake here). I’ll buy a boat here in Anchorage and pay to fly it out to the Bush. They will pay for transporting an outboard so hope to have that all figured out by next weekend. And lastly, no luck finding anywhere back home that can actually sell a snowmobile so I might just wait next winter for it. Doesn’t appear the lake will freeze over this year anyway.

I am considering a Suzuki outboard... right now the Yamaha 40HP is the front runner if I go with the Lund SSV 18. If I end up with the Alaskan I’ll have to move up to 50hp min. (If I decide to buy a jet lower attachment to swap out I’ll have to go with more power). Because of the remote area I’m hoping to keep it 40-50hp so 2 of us can still handle it and it won’t cost quiet as much in freight if something happens that I can’t repair. Pretty pricy to fly it to town for repair.
